Thought I'd post a mix too...
All,
Here's a live set that I did a few months ago at a friend's house party. It's pure techno and very dance-floor-oriented. It's only about 40 or 45 minutes as didn't really have much in the way of loops then, but it went over really well. About half of the material is original and the rest is stuff like Surgeon, Mills, Carola, etc. loops.

(might need to right-click, Save Target As...)
90% of my loops are 1 bar, and the longest loop is 8 bars. It was a very spontaneous set -- I started with a few loops loaded, but from then on I just dragged new loops in.
Feel free to comment...

Nice mix - I don't listen to techno that much but I like your mix a lot.
Check out mine if you get a chance - it's at http://drlaszlo.net. I don't have a laptop yet, and not enough loops, so it's mostly a downtempo dj mix, though there is one song of mine in there.

I like this a lot. It's got a nice overall shape, and seems like it'd work really well as a dance set.
Love to hear what you do with all original materials!
Take care,

Hey neepawa - wicked set...
I too am into techno - hawtin, gaetano parisio, marco carola, ben sims......
what set up did you use? did you use a controller? - if not, how did you controll the fx? I'd also be interested to know how you did the set - did you cut the bottom-end eq on tracks you were mixing out? (ie did you mix it like a usual dj set) - I'm looking to do pretty much what ur doing - half my own tunes, half records I've sampled.
I'd be interested to hook up + find out what software/hardware you use to make you tunes with (and which tunes off that mix were yours!!)

Thanks for the praise!
My gear-setup for that set was a G4 Powerbook 500Mhz running Live v1.1, Motu 828, TC-Electronics M1 (for reverb), and a Peavey PC1600x Midi fader-bank.
I find that most techno tracks can be summed up in about 3 or 4 one-bar loops (ok, maybe that's a simplistic view
, but it works for me!). For example, one without hihats, one with hihats, and maybe a couple of variations with the dominant sound, etc. So, when I want to play a new track, I just drag a group of loops onto a Live track -- like a DJ putting a record on.
The Peavey PC1600x is vital and everyone in the world should own one! I have mine split in half -- faders and buttons 1 through 8 are dedicated to track 1, and 9 through 16 are for track 2. Each group of 8 controls the following:
fader 1 - level
fader 2 - eq low
fader 3 - eq high
fader 4 - hpf
fader 5 - lpf
fader 6 - efx send 1
fader 7 - efx send 2
fader 8 - efx send 3
And I use the buttons to trigger the clips.
As for how I mix the tracks, I tend the ride the hpf and lpf a lot. Often, I can almost seemlessly "swap" kicks. So, I'll start clip with the lpf way down so all you hear is the kick, and at the same time I'll remove the kick from the other track by using the hpf -- then I just massage them both until the mix is done. The other way works well too -- it's very easy to muffle one track ever so slightly and bring in hihats of a new track.
So much for trade secrets!

Hi neepawa - thanks for explaining your setup - I've been thinking along the same lines, though reckon I'll probably want more than 2 tracks - this'll make controlling stuff more difficult though
- we'll see.....
I saw on another topic post that you have a 909 - is this right?? How do you find sync'ing it with Live? is it stable? - I'm thinkin of getting one of those electribes (EM-1) for added percussion + synths etc..
cheers

Hey,
I checked out your set at home, where I actually have bass, and it was a much better set than I had originally thought! I liked it - inspiring stuff. Expect to see a techno or tech-housey set from me in the future!
btw, I too am interested in hearing about syncing hardware if indeed you have a 909.

The last post was by me - judging by the number of people who leave an 'oops that was me' message, the automatic login cookie doesn't work very well...

Yeah, I agree about 2 tracks not being very much, but the beauty of it is that I never get close to taxing my cpu. Actually, since I did that set, I've augmented my setup a bit. I've incorporated my TR-909, Jomox Airbase99, and Nord Modular. Also, I picked up a Kenton Control Freak Live (the red one with 16 knobs) to control effect params. And now that Live has a reverb, I ditched the TC-Electronics M1. Initially I tried using the 909 as the sync master for everything, but it was horrible -- major tempo drift. Now I use Live as the master (works great) and 909, Nord as slaves. I use the 909's external instrument function to trigger the Jomox. My loops are mostly percussive stuff and I use the Nord to drape textures and colour between the spaces. I use the 909 and Jomox primarily for doing spontaneous drum loops (a la Decks Efx and 909 -- Hawtin).

sounds like a great set up neepawa - I'm really jealous - I'd like to hear some of your original tunes (I'm got a funky techno/tech-house label in the UK & we're looking for new artists at the moment...)+ any other mixes you've done. I'll be posting a mix pretty soon hopefully.
P.S. I'm a great Hawtin fan too

Re: Thought I'd post a mix too...
yo guys,
I have the solution because I do it easily, buy the korg zero4 mixer and you can do it from scratch with the sync sampler integrated which you can desync until you get metalic sound as Hawtin....really works, will post video soon...
