Complete System Freeze after 10-15 minutes (2.1.1 / OSX)

Post by random » Wed Aug 27, 2003 8:59 pm

hello everyone:

Im putting together a live set and so far I only have 1-2 audio files on a single track. if I leave the system to loop the audio for about 10-15 minutes on it's own, Live eventually locks up the entire system.

here's the details:

-OS 10.2.6
-Live 2.1.1
-Using CoreAudio (built-in controller)
-Buffer set to 512 samples
-only a few Live plugins used (no VST Mach-O plugs used)
-44.1khz / 16bit audio files
-Power management and all that funkiness is turned off
-No screensavers or or sleep functions activated. all turned off.

It's a pretty straight-forward setup, bare-bone essentials to get Live going. but still something is up. any ideas?

cheers

some additional notes on this problem:

-the problem only happens if I leave the system alone. in other words, If I don't touch a thing. so one might say, "yes, you have some type of powermanagement issue going on that is affecting Live". but I assure you all of that is turned off. nothing goes to sleep or suspends....

-if I continue to make some type of movement or action to the Live interface (either by mouse, keystroke, or receiving external MIDI), then it doesn't lock up.

I have a similar problem random, more like 4 second 'no sound'

Am trying to sort it out.

what sort of machine do you have?

I have a 667 revision b powerbook g4, 512mb ram

My drive is actually quite full, I suspect that could be the issue, if there was a memory leak in live.

I recently used OnyX (free cleanup software) http://www.osx.free.fr/

it found a LOT of room on my discs, performs all the normal stuff Unix usually does at 3am I'm told.

I will be seeing if it makes a difference, as well as cleaning up my disc.

hey keith...

yea, doh! forgot to my system specs down:

-1GHz Powerbook
-512MB RAM
-40GB Drive (plenty of space)
-OSX bootable only (meaning it has the latest system ROM from Apple that only allows OSX booting)

cheers

well that rules out the drive bit.

I have also heard of a similar problem with someone using an external audio box..and I used to have the same problem in 10.2.4

Ableton? want to comment?

Anything we can do to help?

I actually had reason do a similar thing the other day.

Maybe an OSX problem?

Serious stuff. :-(

yea, i've had a Hammerfall Cardbus and the Echo Indigo both installed on this system. I literally went down to CoreAudio/Built-in only to try and narrow out the possibilities of those cards causing issues. apparently not the case...

First thing to do is create a new user account. Run Live from the new user account.

If all is working, log in to the old user account:

1) First delete your preferences:

users/~username/Library/preferences/ableton/preferences.cfg

You may want to also delete sound preferences as well:

root/Library/Preferences/com.apple.soundpref.plist

(I think this is all the preferences that need deleting)

2) Run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.

3) reboot

I had very many troubles upgrading to Live 2.1.1 and 10.2.6. Now everything runs very smoothly, wth the exception of a small number of VST Plugs. I would use it live in a second. NONE of my previous problems have occured since I deleted my preferences and Repaired Permissions. In fact, when something buggy happens to my puter, I repair permissions and it goes away.
