Live 5.0.3 Still Causing CPU Spikes!!!

Just tried out the 5.03 version although there wasn't any changes made to it since the last beta and guess what! Live went straight to its knees when I loaded my latest song. I could play the beginning but also noticed that Live would cracle/bzzzzz! each time it went into a new section - not a good sign. And yes as it arrived at the main-theme of the song it just stalled - bzzzzzzz, ca-ca-ca-ca-ca-ca-ca 100+ % playing everything reeeeeaaaaallll slow. I managed to move my mouse to the stop button and finally made it stop. MY GOD!
Just to try something I went through drivers (also graphics this time) and tried different prefs settings with no result. I do not have time for this!
I left my computer for a while with Live and my song still on. When I came back an hour later I could play the song without a problem - ONCE!. Then as I started it again Live froze on me the same way as before locking the system with a cpu usage of 100+.
I don't know what to do! Somehow I feel there is nothing I can do - that it's simply out of my hands. Each time I find something that is working a little its really not in the long run. Very frustrating!
My system:
- Intel P4 3.2 Ghz, 512 ram 60 gig hd.
- Ati radeon 9600 with latest drivers
- Windows XP pro and up-do-date.
- Tascam us-122 with latest drivers / Used it flawlessly before with Emagic Logic 5.
- Tweaked with www.musicxp.net
- Otherwise fresh install of everything
If the problems with these CPU spikes and bad performance in general is not looked at in the very near future I'm afraid I will simply have to put my EUR 499.00 Live 5 package away for good! Right now it's worthless to me.
People are tired and they want this looked at in one way or another. Otherwise you can just keep your buggy software to yourself and the 20% users who seem to have no problems. In time the rest of us will have to look elsewhere for a solution that works.

note:
is there anyone who can test the RADEON 9600 with this issue?
ie. someone with another card ... pull the fucking radeon in a system with lagged arrange / cpu spikes and replace it with another card.
please. this card keeps popping up with people that are having performance problems; someone should really look into testing this .. ableton or not ..

Hi Alex.Alex wrote:Crealive,
as you said Live 4.x works fine for you do you Live 4.x still installed on your computer?
If yes, do you have a Live set that runs without a problem in Live 4 but exactly the same set (or a copy of it) does not run smoothly in Live 5.0.3?
regards,
/Alex
I'm sorry but I do not have Live 4. I worked quite a lot with the demo of Live 4 before buying the version 5 update and even though I do remember Live 4 causing some problems for me it was never as bad as it has been with Live 5.
Anyway, I wrote the following in my earlier post: ("which worked a lot better acording to so many statements in here"). Lots of people have said that they seemed to have a better system with Live 4.x compared to Live 5. Even between the different versions of Live 5.
I'm afraid I can't be of much help in this comparison of version 4 vs 5, but mayby somebody else have a track that runs smooth in Live 4 and terrible in Live 5, which Ableton can have a look at and maybe learn something from.
Also I do realize that it might in the end be something with my system, but I am now at the point where I seem to have tried so many things and just don't want to spend much more time on tweaking and re-installing stuff. And I do know that other programs such as Logic, Cubase or similar are not problem free either, but non of these ever caused me as much problems as Ableton Live 5, which has completely put my music production at a halt. This software should be working right out of the box with maybe a few adjustments here and there.
Over and out.

Hi Crealive,
could you send me the Live set (only the .als, no samples) where you get these CPU spikes and to which you refer in your previous posting?
Also,
- does it makes a difference when you change the buffer size of the Tascam audio interface?
- if you use plug-ins in this set, does it makes a difference when using another plug-in buffer size (you can setup in the plug-in section of Live's preferences)?
- how much physical and virtual memory is Live needing when you have load this Live set (you can see it in the task manager)?
regards,
/Alex

1. does it makes a difference when you change the buffer size of the Tascam audio interface?
Nope tried that and it altered nothing.

Nope - using "same as audiocard"! Not sure but I think some of the other settings made things worse.

I will have to get back to you on that one. I'm at work. Not sure my boss is that happy about paying for an Ableton tester / debugger (me in this case)!

I have same stuttering problems.
I played a liveset last summer with my brand new machine and live 4. No problems whatsoever. I switched to live 5 and started working on a variation of the liveset. This set I played yesterday in a club and in the end of about 1,5h set I get really nasty stuttering when the clips are changed.
I also got the same thing on every single clip earlier (when I was working with the set), but when I set my latencys very high and stopped all unnecessary programs running in memory it got much better. But looks like it had to fail me in live situation then.
I think this has got something to do with memory (like I said it got a lot better when I stopped some programs and services). I only have 512MB memory and laptop harddrives tend to be slow, so I believe the stuttering comes from my machine having to operate on swap memory. 512 isn't much I know. But that's all I could afford right now, and I only have max 8 tracks of short clips running at the same time, some ableton effects and few vst-compressors in master. But it really feels like it is some sort of memory leak somewhere.
I really hate the stuttering so I think I have to pinch money from somewhere to get more RAM to be able to continue playing live. Or then start digging my old Live 4 install up and start testing if it works better.
System: Asus A4740 laptop (3,2ghz mobile pentium 4), 512MB RAM, M-Audio audiophile FW.
I really wish you can do something about this...

hello all
hi...just a note on the subject. i am doing alright with 5.0. i was going to download the updates but think i'll wait and keep reading this board! i do use a lot of plug ins and effects, and sometimes have to freeze tracks but so far things are okay.
thanks people for staying on this...your reported troubles may have saved me some and i am thankful.

I just downloaded 5.0.3, and giving it at try now.Alex wrote:Hi borg nagar,
do you use Live 5.0.3 or still Live 5.0.2.
:edit: Tried it, and it seems a lot smoother than previous version. Giving it a couple hours of test playing now. Let's hope it works.
:edit: It works very well, thanks. I guess this was way off-topic since the thread was about 5.0.3.

i had the same suspition... but i have 1.5 GB in my PB.. and when i play my liveset there is still some free memory... i also went to the macstore where i bought the last 1GB RAM... and changed it for a new one... and the problem is still there...Alex wrote: We also suspect that these stutters could be some kind memory problem.
what does Ableton Live does when u play a clip for the first time ? what does it does when u turn a filter on for the first time ? or when u move a send for the first time ? or when u do some of that after some time without using it ?
isnt there any way that u can keep all that fresh ? like if everything was already played some minutes before ? that way, there wouldnt be any "first times" for all that... and therefore (at least to me) no more audio drop outs...
btw... thnx for start replying to this thread...

I've always had issues with the stock ATI drivers (on 2 seperate puters too!). Try these!supster wrote:

its now nearly 2006 , and i have endured the following problems with live5:
when recording clips , it would stop recording a few notes short making 'on the fly' looping or recording redundant.
the midi timing
and now audio glitches , using a firewire maudio interface
using the same audio interface , on a less spec'd machine ableton live 4.14 worked like a charm - so i know what a functioning live functions like.
anyways , check out this link...and tell me if you dont see the paralells between stanton/NI and ableton/firewire/maudio
