Half tempo and double tempo not working.

Post by SongCarver » Tue May 07, 2002 9:06 pm

Sometimes the half tempo and double tempo buttons do not work - is there a reason for this.

For that matter sometimes clips that have loaded do not play. could that be a problem with the associated data file?

cheers,
K

The double/half buttons work in 2 cases only:
1. only 1 WarpMarker
2. 2 WarpMarkers one at the beginning one at the end.
I could not reproduce the problem. However if for some reason the automatically added 2. marker is not placed exactly at the end (this could be due to a float precision problem and may happen randomly), double/half won't work. Try to grab the 2. WarpMarker and move it right and then try again to double/half.
I hope I could help you. It would help us if you would keep us informed if this was the problem or if the problem still persists.

Best regards, Reiner

IN THIS ISSUE: HALF TEMPO, LOOPING, AND RECORDING TRIGGER MODES

HALF-TEMPO
I didn't realize that half-tempo is limited to this "one constant tempo" paradigm"

Thats probably my problem.

I think the whole looping section needs a good hard look at to find a more performable answer. eg

-Half tempo and double should work anytime... I know there's a chunk of programming to do that but it needs to act consistently

LOOPING
-There should be much better ways to edit the loop points, maybe based on a dial/ radial sort of movement.

- Should have the ability to loop any section at any point, was playing the last bar, now I want it to repeat into a loop of the first bar

- "loop the last four bars i played" sort of thing

-Have buttons to instantly "recentre" the loop markers, like the ones that currently change the display parameters. Be able to reset the loop start to 1 1 1 1 for instance.

-Make looping automated, be able to use pitch wheel/ a knob etc to control loop position/ loop length - much like Ensoniq s TRANSWAVE technology

-Have 'snap-to-quantisation' work in the loop point markers

-fix the tranpose dial - automate it, turn it into a midi keyboard, like in cubase. Have an offset parameter to show what key the song is in originally - users probably have to input this manually.

REALLY look at the paradigm of studio-versus-live performance.... the two are quite different.... for instance...

If working in a studio, there is no problem if you bring a long loop in late/ out of time... "take 2!"

but in a live situation if i trigger a loop an 1/8 (a quaver) too late then it I'm in trouble, esp. if the loop/ sample is a minute or two long (DJing)

There NEEDs to be a way to "fix that"

And I know I can set the quantisation, but I am talking about performance... If a performer wants to have the expression of more incremental values, and is willing to pay for it with practice, then that is the way to musicianship. You may be saying "why don't you just set the quantisation to 1 bar just before you trigger that sample"

Because, as a performer I don't know if that is exact point when I need to commit to a long triggered sample-playback. Music, after all, is a feedback-type process. Ayou need to listen before you can make another decision.

I think you need to think of LIVE as an instrument closer to a trumpet than a mixing desk.

If you fluff a note on a trumpet then you can correct really quickly, if you play out of tune for a note, then you can correct.

A good musician will make this correction so fast that the listener can not tell that it was a mistake.

Thats what LIVE needs to be able to do.

If I fluff a note (bring in a loop too late) then I should be able to nudge it forward or back.

If I accidentally turn off a loop then I should be able to turn it back on, without it restarting from the beginning.

RECORDING

-When recording, I should be able to enable record, record a loop, play that back and go to the next loop position much easier.

I propose a record mode that should let you record over an existing samples spot, by moving that existing sample to the next available position at the bottom.

I should have _one button_ to enable record, commence recording and play once the button is re-hit.

that same button, when pressed again would move me down to the next available slot, and start recording.

Think about playing a guitar and recording at the same time, which is what I am attempting.

If you have any questions, then fire away, I am SongCarver btw.

thankyou.
