Upgrade 5.0.1 -> 5.02/5.03 gotchas to watch for...

I hvae noticed that if you upgrade and install parralel multiple versions, the configuration file for later seems to get confused and and f.cked err screw up the settings for various things and change the behaviour( like no clip view).

There is a simple solution:
( Warning: this will clear all your defaults in the file browser, recent files and sound cards etc, plus youll need to enter the path to your vst's )

Make sure live is shutdown.. then....

1. Open a file window and Navigate to
C:\Documents and Settings\[Username]\Application Data\Ableton\Live 5.0.3\Preferences

2. In this folder, rename the Preferences.cfg file to Prefences.cfg.backup
3. Restart Live

If ableton refuses to start or things just get worse, at this point you can always copy the Prefences.cfg.backup file over the Prefences.cfg

For me, it meant I could use the clip functionality again(!!!) and the thing loads in a heartbeat compared to what it used to.

I would suggest going through this process every time you install an upgrade just to be sure and keep things lean and mean.

Hi [email protected],
For me, it meant I could use the clip functionality again(!!!) and the thing loads in a heartbeat compared to what it used to.
Could you please explain what do you mean with "clip functionality"?

Will deleting this file allow me to open .als files again by double clicking? I have been getting a error code -10660, doing this ever since upgrading to 5.0.3. I can only open my sets from file>open after Live is already lauched.

Sent email to Abes about it last weekend, still waiting for response.

Alex,
when I say clip functionality I mean access to edit a clip.. when I double clicked on a clip, the pane on the bottom of the window would just dissappear, instead of showing the clip view and editor.( Which was quite distressing!). I can see the mini view on the bottom line of the display that shows a preview of the wave file ( in this case) but the piece above with the editor is missing.

The key bindings did not worlk either ( tab + shift ) and behave as above. The track view was still working so I could see and manipulate patching for audio etc.

FYI I have the following Live versions installed

4.1.2
4.1.4
5.0.1
5.0.2
5.0.3

In running XP SR2 which is patched up to date.
I also a have a rash of plugins installed ( Komplete 3 and many others) and use all the junk in my sig as above.

I have the 5.0.2 version still installed where I did not clean out the Preferences.cfg and it is still exhibiting the weirdness described above.

Thanks,
Jeremy.

Hi Jeremy,

sounds strange as there is now mechanism in Live that should avoid to show the clip detail view when double-click a track.

Could you send me the preferences file with which you get this behavior?

/Alex
