solid state hard disks

Post by thump » Thu Jan 05, 2006 1:47 am

so i'm pretty stoked on the flash ram drives that are coming out right now, and i was reading about their access speeds (the article i was looking at quoted 57mbps read, 32 write for the manufacturer in question), and i got to thinking: does that negate the need for multiple hard drives for audio work? i know a lot of folks don't like running their os and audio apps off the same drive that they read and write raw audio from...does anyone here have an informed opinion as to the manner in which this new technology affects those concerns?

that's quite a bit slower than a hard drive though right? firewire starts at 400 mbps....SATA starts at 1500 mbps and ATA is around 1000 for reference.

I'm open to correction on details but flash is quite a bit slower from what i can tell.

well, yeah, those are the maximum speeds for those particular protocols...but that's not necessarily the speeds that most drives are able to sustainably achieve. there are plenty of enterprise-class solutions available that can use most if not all of that bandwidth, but i was under the impression that most laptop hard disks were more in the range of 30mbps sustained read. i'm thinking more along the lines of laptop drives than desktops/towers/servers; i guess i could have been more clear in my original post. :)
