Just replaced by 5400 internal HD to 7200!

Post by ChiDJ » Tue Jan 03, 2006 3:49 pm

I have a PB G4 1.25 ghz. with 1.25 gigs of RAM. After over 12 hours of dis-assembly and re-assembly, (There were no accurate manuals on line). I made the replacement.

What a huge difference in performance! In all apps, even GUI speed.

I haven't used DP on it, (I use DP strictly in my G4 dually), but Abletone LIVE is smokin'

Hurrah for Speed!!!

Congratulations...

I have a 1.5 gig PB with 1.25 gig ram and a 4200 speed hard drive. I have been hedging on whether to upgrade to 7200 or not.

What sort of improvements have you noticed.

Granted these observations are not scientific:

Must faster GUI

LIVE opens about 4 times faster

The occasional "chirping / g;itching? I would get when running 6-8 simultsneous clips is gone. I haven't tried to max it out yet.

I'll keep you guys posted.

I'm not a PC person, but I would assume "about this computer" or "properties"?

performance increase is not much to do with hard drive change but is more to change with added ram. Ableton live doesnt take advintages of faster hard drive on laptops even so some say it does.

Umm, no. Ableton certainly -will- perform better with a faster hard drive. In fact, everything on the computer will.

The only thing that does not improve when adding a faster hard drive is your battery :)

Radeon, how can you say that? I've done it. On 3 different computers. It does. :D

I don't know what to think. I'm reading totally mixed reviews over the last year everywhere about this when you compare the 7200 to the stock 5400 powerbook drive. Check out the last comment of this thread for example.

I don't care how long it takes to startup my computer, launch applications or render to disk. I'm only concerned how many plugins and how many tracks I can get in Live when I hit play on my current powerbook.

I also called a mac repair center last year and they said they would be happy to install the hitachi travelstar for me but I most likely will not see much performance increase in the areas (real time audio processing) where it's most important to me. They said the main benefit of going to a 7200 is faster launch times, and faster rendering of audio/video and such. For real time audio processing type things, they said CPU has much more impact.

I have no doubt the OS feels snappier and rendering is faster with a 7200, but will I eek out one more plugin, get an extra couple audio tracks, or be able to stay a little higher on my CPU meter without crackling? Who knows...

This weekend,

I'll check out the plug count and crack / pops issues and see if there is a difference. (even though I'm already convinced there is)

Anyone know, is the hitachi travelstar 7k60 still the best one for a 12" powerbook? The info and comments I've found about it are a year or two old.

I'm also curious about the 8MB of cache in the travelstar and how it compares. How many MB cache is the current 12" powerbook?

ya, i did a hd upgrade and my battery has really paid for it. laptop users, take note of this! live definitely runs faster though, not everything, of course, but hd related stuff.

When you say your battery paid for it, how long does a charge last? You make it sound terrible in your post. 75% of what it used to be? 50% of what it used to be?

Also, I'm assuming the long-term battery lifetime isn't affected significantly...
