just looking at this instead of a mackie control, nice having the audio section built into it, can anyone offer any good reports in terms of latency, performance, ease of use etc ? does it work well as a soundcard and controller at the same time ?
i personally don't recomment this combination. a friend of me had a tiger + o1X, and it didn't work properly.no clear audio signal output. high cpu, + a lot of other trouble.we didn't find a solution. so bad , he returned the yamaha back to the store. sad story.

I have a 01X. And I must say I'm quite happy with it. In the beginning I was having a lot of trouble with setting it up. Lost the wordclock connection all the time. Then I updated some pcmcia drivers on my computer and it got better. I also can mention that I got this mixer when it first came out, so there was a lot of trouble with the drivers and such.
It uses more cpu than most soundcards I have tried. I get better performance out of my Alesis Photon using asio4all. But I like the mixer anyway. The sound quality is superb! You can optimize it by turning off inputs and outputs in the mLan manager. I use 2 inputs and 2 outputs. And there is also a setting for how much cpu you want it to use. I have an old Dell inspiron 1.8 ghz. I think the recomended pc is 2.0 ghz. I make songs with ca. 10-12 tracks of audio and midi. And probably 10-15 plugins. And it works just fine.
You also get state of the art preamps and inputs from the biggest yamaha mixers. These are extremely good. Wich also goes for the internal effects.

i've also experienced the connectivity problems that undaria mentioned. the mlan drivers tend to cyclically max out my cpu (2.0 ghz imac). as a result, sometimes i get audio clipping. however, this tends to happen more when my rs7000 is connected via midi, which for recording purposes i limit. also, if you set your buffer sizes correctly, you should be able to work around the driver limitations (we're all hoping for new mlan drivers soon! you might want to look into that before purchase).
beware if you are planning to use the 01x as a remote. you can midi map the unit, but it limits versatility.

Thanks guys, seeing as how I have not got heaps of experience with mackie control protocol it sounds like it might be a bit complex, maybe problematic especially seeing as it sounds like latency is not that great with it which is one of the main reasons i was looking at it because I thought it's latency performance might be quite good, i heard the yamaha i88x was good on mac so thought maybe it shares the same driver as the 01x ?
Anyhow, probably not my best option at the moment as I would like to keep things simple, the project mix looks good too but I have not had good experience with m-audio firewire stuff (mostly poor latency) does anyone have any good reports with project mix on mac ?
