Request for the return of the grid

Post by Martyn » Tue Jan 10, 2006 9:57 am

I put this one in the wishlist a while ago but it's really driving me nuts now.

Being as some of the other strange (and unpopular) feature ammendments have been reversed lately, I'd like to ask for a review of the idea of having the arrangement page grid disappear when snap is turned off.

I realise it's not a bug, but I just can't fathom why anyone would ever want this to happen.

Please bring the grid back, I really miss it.

this is really starting to bother me the more I think about it--why on earth did it need to be removed? Why did they spend their precious man hours working on removing something useful to no apparent end, while there are plenty of things that need attention and fixing in the program? It just doesn't make any sense. I just hope they aren't cooking up a half-backed Live 6 to be released this summer--they really need to get 5 as tightened up as 3 and 4 before moving on to a whole round of new problems!

coming soon in Live 6 !
  • removal of 'quantize to 16ths'
  • removal of 'return channels' and 'volume faders'
  • removal of all envelopes
  • etc ..
they need to stop focusing on 'maintaining GUI tidyness' and start focusing more on what we want and use. There have been quite a few mistakes in usability recently that seem to stem from an overwhelming desire for neatness in the code and GUI.

Ableton, sometimes less is not more.

performers need everything to hand, much more than they need everything tidied away.

I want this too, as well as the grid in Clip view too, which is actually more important to me.

I always snap everything so I hadn't noticed this but I agree: When snap is off it is still good to have a visual reference to where you are. The grid should always display for reference.

Why can't we just hold down the alt key to suspend snapping, like in the midi editor? If it's all about streamlining workflow, then surely having the same key commands throughout has to be the way to go.

I agree. The alt key should allow you to set your markers anywhere for any view.

I would also like to be able to arrow right to move clips in arrange view.

It's a valid thing to want to do for sure, why no option though? In apps like Photoshop, being able to hide/show a grid and being able to snap to it or not are just taken for granted as a normal thing to want to do. Why can't we have preferences for this sort of thing?
