what we have all been waiting for... the macintel is here!
From the Apple website: "What's an Intel chip doing in a Mac? A whole lot more than it's ever done in a PC."

The bottom line here is that flame wars about hardware and software don't make music. also laptops don't make music. People do. The beatles recorded Sgt. pepper with 8 tracks. That's it. We have so much more available to us than these artists that have made masterpieces. Look at dark side of the moon. The intro to money is perhaps the first loop used on an album. They spliced 7 pieces of tape together to make the sounds play over and over. I am using a mac with live. I can find ways to get around the limitations and create music with it. I tried windows, it didn't work for me. I'm not going to bash anyone here if they don't. I feel more confortable using my powerbook onstage than a pc. It is the OS, not the hardware anyway. I will probably by a new macbook at the end of this year. I just bought my powerbook 6 months ago. i am happy with it. I don't need it to run a million things at one time. I prefer to write music, and make my equiptment work for me, rather than fight it. If vista comes out and ends up being secure and stable, that will be great. I still don't think xp is good enough yet. It is better than 98 or 2k, but still not great. If you don't agree, fine. If making music on pc works for you, great. I'll take a slightly slower, more reliable machine anyday over a glitchy one. The flame wars have to go, they are really pointless anymore.[

can we have a corollary to Godwins Lawthat a platform/equipment debate is over once someone mentions the beatles/8-track technology ?

and can I at this point mention Hitler, and equate him with both Steve Gates and Bill Jobs just to be sure.

It should be noted also that the Beatles didn't merely have a tape machine (3, 4, 8 track) sitting in their living room. They had a state of the art sudio. They had a team of very talented producers and engineers (back when the term meant a lot more than someone who moves a couple of faders around), capable and willing to build and indeed invent the technology required to make those records.
So in a sense we have more available technologically, but few have ever had the combination of talent and oportunities they had, before or since.

NO!
Suit #1: I mean, have you got any insight as to why a bright boy like this would jeopardize the lives of millions?
Suit #2: No, sir, he says he does this sort of thing for fun.

OK:
MACINTOSH IS A MORE ADVANCED OS ESPECIALLY FOR MULTIMEDIA CREATION.
WINDOWS IS A MULTIPURPOSE OS THAT STILL IS PRETTY AMAZING CONSIDERING WHAT YOU HAD 10-20 YEARS AGO.
The fact is, if you are familiar with Windows and know how to manage your PC, it will run as stable as any MAC. Almost ALL of my friends who make electronic "music" use MACS, and their computers crash WAY more often than mine.....
why is that???? I rarely have any problems with my PC, and usually if there is a problem it is somehow related to the INTERNET, i.e. virii, spyware.....
making and playing music even on my OLD 1.5 GHz Pentium 4 I NEVER HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER. Never crashes, only acts funny when I use to many tracks or plug-ins......that's mostly due to memory limitations. So Windows works FINE FOR ME.
Plus A GOOD WINDOWS NOTEBOOK CAN ALWAYS BE FOUND FOR MUCH LESS THAN A MAC BRAND NEW. PLUS YOU HAVE WAY MORE OPTIONS FOR CONFIGURING YOUR OWN PC. That is REALLY why I LIKE the PC platform. You simply have a hell of a lot more choices. INTEL CENTRINO, Pentium 4, AMD 64, Xeons, Opterons, EE, Pentium D, RAck computers, Tablets, Custom-designed TOWERS, Choices of HARD DRIVES, Graphics cards, small form factor, etc.etc.etc. so many different design to choose from. You only get one with MAC. I think it looks boring. 5 years ago the design was innovative, but look at the new PC designs....
THAT IS WHY THE PC WORLD IS APPEALING. CHOICES. Options. Flexibilty and VARYING PRICE RANGES TO FIT ANYBODY's BUDGET. EVEN THE LITTLE LITTLE GUY can have a nice computer. Not so with MAC. Strictly for PEOPLE WITH MONEY. Always has been. It's an elitist thing, and I think that is where the real issue lies. People who want to live in the IVORY TOWER want the "power" and "prestige" of MAC, as well as the image and social status that USED TO go with it. That is why you all get so pissed off when PC technology advances beyond your MACS and "LOWLY" PC users can make great music with a cheap computer. You lose that imaginary power that made you feel so superior to the rest of the computing world.
Bill Gates brought power computing to the masses, and he has changed the world for the better, in the end. Period. We are much better off with Windows, with all of it's flaws, and all of Microsoft's sneaky practices, then we would be otherwise.
Granted, it's not as "PRETTY" as OSX, but it WORKS. WINDOWS IS UTILITARIAN. MAC is a fashion statement (just kidding).
ALL THAT MATTERS IS WHAT YOU DO WITH. IT's like a hammer, you can build a house with it or hit someone over the head. IT'S UP TO YOU!!!!
remember Windows Vista is coming and I think it will give OSX a run for it's money....

Well now that I can run windows on a mac, that allows me to have the power and stability of the new macs WITH MACOSX AND WINDOWS.
No more Windows and MacOSX debates. You can run they both on the same machine. If you want to debate, then debate about Dell VS Apple
Personally, I think Apple rapes Dell or any other PC "Hardware" now that you can run windows on it aswell. It looks better, has better features all around, and of course, it has and intel chip now.

I'm not rich. I've saved money to get a Mac because I wanted to make music and not figure out how to make a PC stable. I have money for one computer to use for office, surfing and music needs. I don't want to dual boot. I don't mind the fact that my g4 PB is slower then intel machines (I know that it is, it's not Ableton's fault! I really don't mind !).
And now I'll start saving for a machine that's almost as fast as the fastest Windows laptop and not a lot more expensive. I'm fine.
I was raised on Mac OS and never wanted anything else. I lock up behind a windows machine. So I will not buy one.
As for choices: I allways get awfully confused in those stores that let you assemble your own PC from parts. How the hell are you supposed to know it will all work together ?
Cheers,
Allert

For years Apple had all these (highly questionable) comparisons of their G processors versus PC and how much faster they were. RISC supercomputer Altivec Dual processor knock your socks off computing power...
Now they have Intel versus G4 comparisons and they are saying how much faster the Intel is.
That's pretty funny!
Hmmm - I am actually waiting for someone at Apple to explain this - the altivec engine seemed like a great idea to me - I am skeptical that the new Intels are actually 4x faster for the kind of stuff that was optimized for Altivec.

Intels have SSE which is more or less the same thing, I think. You can look up RISC vs CISC over at arstechnica.com for a geeky explanation of it all.monarkeys wrote:Hmmm - I am actually waiting for someone at Apple to explain this - the altivec engine seemed like a great idea to me - I am skeptical that the new Intels are actually 4x faster for the kind of stuff that was optimized for Altivec.

The 4x faster claim is probably on the assumption that both cores are being utilised. One of those intel cores would easily be 2x faster than a top spec powerbook, as demonstrated in the Live 5 perf test thread.monarkeys wrote: Hmmm - I am actually waiting for someone at Apple to explain this - the altivec engine seemed like a great idea to me - I am skeptical that the new Intels are actually 4x faster for the kind of stuff that was optimized for Altivec.
