going mental, cant sync 2 lappies with two photon x25s why?

Post by theque » Wed Jan 11, 2006 5:07 am

hey people, would love some help.

i have: 2x mac g4 i books
2x live 5
2x alesis photon x25's
1x midi cable

the question is what do i have to do to get the two synced up. i have got them synced using imidi software and a crossover cable, but would really like to use midi cause the imidi is pretty unstable sometimes and i have had some weird delay problems. would really appreciate some help if any one has done this or can offer any advice. i have played around with the external sync and can get it to send from the master but not receive.

on another point with the photon, has anyone had any success with the air fx thingy, i have trouble assinging the xyz because it keeps jumping around(there has gotta be an easier way) and when i do assign something there seems to be a restricted range of movement about 50 %

sorry for all the questions but i gotta work this out, or i will have to start hurting my self. by the way if any one is interested other than the described problems the photon is wicked, seriously cant get any better quality and features for 200 bills

The best solution is to use an external midi clock from a device such as a drum machine or keyboard, or a midi timepiece from a company like Motu or DigiDesign. I myself use a Roland SH-32 desktop synth with a midi splitter cable as my master clock. You can use software such as Midiclock http://www.grantedsw.com/midiclock/ , which is pretty good. Lastly you can use one computer as a master clock, and link the two photons. I do not, however, recommend this. Keep in mind, when using an external clock, Live's transport controls are disabled. So start the transport before engaging external sync, just make sure all your clips are stopped first.

As far as the "airFX' controller, good luck. As a former sales tech and product specialist at a rental store, I have been inundated with questions about its use ever since it made it's debut on the two "AirFX" dsp modules. It seems to have all the qirks of a theremin, but all the uselessness of its competition, the Roland "D-Beam" controller. I have been hard pressed to find anything that it can accuratly control, other than filter sweep or gain. Both of these devices are very in accurate, and highly prone to interference. That's why most manufacturers have been reluctant to include them in their own hardware. So, you are really on your own.

thanks reverend, i'll give the midi clock a whirl. i tried connecting the two photons as i dont mind the two transports being disbled but could not make it happen. any way i see how i go with that option. thanks

Photon X25 XYZ dome and Live

Post by dancook » Thu Nov 30, 2006 9:59 pm

theque,

Did you ever succeed at mapping the xyz dome to controls within Live? I have Live6 and a Photon X25 and have been hoping to control Live wth it. I have verified that the xyz dome is sending sensible data, via MIDI-OX.

What I'd really like to do is a theremin-like thing where the Z-control value from 0-127 sends a 'note on' command, and the X or Y control value determines the volume. However the xyz seems not to send note information, but just other CC commands like pitch change and breath.

hey dan cook, i tried using the xyz for a while but lost interest and gave up as i found it pretty hard to assign and not so accrate to use. yes it only sends cc's. i did end up getting the computers to sync though., sorry i can be no more help.

theque,

Using MIDI-OX + MIDI Yoke (world's greatest MIDI utility) I was able to re-map the MIDI events generated by the XYZ dome, so that they're no longer Control Change events.

The X-control now emits NoteOn events and the Z-control is mapped to control the output value of a MIDI Velocity device within Live6. I ignore the Y-control for now.

Within Live6 I set up device chains that are triggered by velocity value and Note value. In this way I was able to create a theremin-like MIDI effects rack. In my case I am using a grand piano virtual instrument at the end of the device chain, and the end result is that I can wave my fingers over the dome and make a pretty big cacophony with it. No two hands or even four hands could hit as many keys as my custom theremin rack can put out! Using the Scale and Chord devices I can turn this racket into something no so abrasive.

My kids are going to love playing air piano when I show it to them.
