Blue Screens of Death

Is it me or have i noticed a few mentions of BSOD recently?

I've had 3 since installing 5.03.

Before 5.03 i haven't had one.

Any other windows users getting the same thing?

wow, I'm tempting fate here but I haven't had a BSOD in about 5 years!
Although, I'm on 5.02 because I don't like the clip re-start issue introduced in 5.03

do you have any further system info, OS, service packs, other hardware (eg audio cards), unusual drivers, etc.

Same thing, never seen since Win98

I'm now a mac user but only for thr past like 7months have i been using os x before that always windows and up until reading this post i thought there was no longer a BSOD, have not seen it in years.

They are still possible (a bit different to the win98 one) the only time I've ever experienced one was when trying out a beta of some really shitty program that I ripped out immediately afterwards, I can't even remember what was.

I've never had one with anything else. I used to get the odd driver lockup back in Live 2 days but generally Ableton Live has always been probably the most stable app on my system, Live 5.0.3 included.

blue screens on XP are supposed to be totally hardware related - meaning *in theory* they should only happen when you have a hardware problem

I get them quite alot lately because my laptop is overheating - happenend summer last year in the UK and happenening alot in Queensland which is always hot

it seems to be better when I get some of those Eski cooler ice block things and sit the back of the laptop on it

maybe it's the heat then. My lappy has to do pretty much everything and i do push it a lot.

I have a usb hard drive and Tascam US122 interface but they haven't caused problems before.

I'm seriously thinking I need to get one of those laptop cooler bases as soon as I can afford it - unless I can figure out a way of making one

BSODs in XP are almost always hardware-related, whether it's drivers, overheating, or some other conflict/malfunction. It should never be caused by software or the OS itself... XP is good enough to deal with buggy software without bringing the whole system down.

If you can manage to grab the STOP #, then you may be able to find out what's causing it. I know the BSOD's can disappear pretty quick, but if it happens more often, try to fixate on the line that looks similar to this

STOP: 0xC0000221 STATUS_IMAGE_CHECKSUM_MISMATCH PATH

All you need is the number that looks like this 0xC0000221, and you can put it in google, or go to microsoft's support site, and type it in. It should give you a pretty detailed description of general causes for said #. That way you'll be able to figure out if your lappy is really going, or you just need to update some drivers. Generally BSOD's are hardware related, but since drivers talk directly to the hardware, they can cause it as well.

I nearly made one for my old Dell out of some aluminium and shit. There's a cool looking one called the iCurve that's basically just a piece of acrylic or something. I think having it raised as per iCurve would be as good as having a fans and not having it raised, but I could be wrong.

Hey forge, where in Oz are you from? (Me being forgie from Oz and all, I only feel it's appropriate to know who's identity I'm stealing)

Oh and BSODs have only happened on my Dell laptop when I move it and it's hot - I think there's a 'weak point' in the mobo that makes XP crash when I hold it in a certani way. Dodgy indeed. Thanks Dell. Oh, and once I got a BSOD when I had a PCI card improperly seated.

Anyone saying that the BSOD happens all the time in windows is spreading FUD - it's nearly always a hardware or driver thing, and the equivalent can happen on OSX (a kernel panic - well it's almost equivalent).
