Happiest musical moment

Post by brightonalex » Thu Jan 26, 2006 12:41 am

There's loads of fear from the main record companies about how to deal with the public taking their music for free. They say that with everyone downloading tunes, no one will pay for CDs anymore. I think that this is quite an exciting possibiilty; if nobody is prepared to pay for their music
any more then bands will have to prove themselves live.

Imagine this- the only way to make money is by building a fanbase locally, and building on this. The Arctic Monkeys have already worked this out. By building up their fanbase they've ignored the big record companies and made it.

My question is, what is the best live music venue that you've been to?
Mine is Ronnie Scott's. If a single record had never been treated to viynl, i would die happy if i had performed at Ronnie Scott's.
What live event has made you want to perform?

Spundae Party - Terry Mullan - Old School USC Warehouse

Crobar Miami - Carl Cox - The ultimate clubbing experience, ever

Funkadelic - Bumbershoot late 80's something (I was 8th grade) - Magot Brain guitar solo - yeah, that was cool

Donald Glaude - Molecule (my rave) closing set at NAF Studio's '99 - doesn't get anymore warehouse than that...

Jack Johnson Live on Directv - just kidding , I hate that shit

*edit*

Ok, I changed my mind. The most inspiring show I've ever been to was hands down the Dillenger Escape Plan. By far, some of the most talented musicians I've ever seen onstage.

As far as DJ sets go, I'd pick the first time I saw Chris Liebing in Chicago. I can't say I still dig on hard techno anymore, but watching the combination of energy and effortlessness that man put into his music was definitely an inspiration.

generally I dont like live acts, but ...

I saw Shivkumar Sharma and Zakir Hussein do a small gig with less than 100 people in the crowd in about 1990 it was un-be-lievable. I heard music actually speak for the first time! I wasn't stoned or anything, the whole crowd seemed physically shocked by the force of the performance.

I saw Bootsy Collins funk it up with his brother (Catfish) and the Rubber Band about '95, I thought he would be a shadow of his former self .. was I wrong! A friend of mine who 'hates funk' got dragged along I saw him just staring with his mouth open for about 5 solid minutes. Afterwards he was actually speechless.

Jamie Liddel in 2003 made me rethink my ideas than one man and a laptop 'perform' was a recipe for boredom. I thought I had it covered and he proved me wrong in the best possible way.

notable mention :
Unknown rotund indian Shenhai player guy at a tiny free concert in late 90's . He was seemingly out of his mind on opiates - again his playing 'spoke' of deep things. He had to be manouvered into place by his backing musicians he was so out of it.

There are others of course

who is this ass and why is he so popular? i kept hearing these extremely annoying songs over the xmas holidays, with the most banal lyrics about nothing.....i realized it was all by this one person and that person was jack johnson. I'm not one to get too wound up about music anymore ubt who actually listens to 'music' like this and why?

edit oh yeah and to stay on topic life changing shows were;

the flaming lips in 93-94 and 95
the boredoms 95
john zorn's cobra 95

noise begat noise in my youth

which begat seeing two shows at glasto by bands i am embarassed to admit changed my outlook on music but i can't deny seeing the prodigy and goldie did my head in that year as well

so i guess 1995 was the year my brain broke and it's all been downhill ever since........or else
that was just the year i became a gear nerd and found reverb convolution techniques more interesting than people

i'm guessing the latter

I'm actually almost embarrassed to admit it now, but there's this band from Ontario (where I'm from) who I used to like in highschool called the Tea Party, and I 'd have to say that a a couple of their shows were about the most mezmerizing I've seen. I'm not a fan of them at all anymore, don't like anything they've done for a while, but they were mixing electronic stuff with heavy rock just when that was starting to intrigue me.

Just three guys, but a big sound. One show that stands out was a small venue at mohawk college in hamilton. I was standing a few feet from them as they played a one hour acoustic set with all kinds of middle eastern instruments, and then for an hour after that they rocked everyone's socks off. Never heard such a big sound.

Too bad I really can't stand any of their albums since.

Otherwise, Chemical brothers in 1999 here in Vancouver blew me away. Man, did they have a lot of gear up there on stage. I had no idea what they were doing, but they definitely weren't staring at a laptop.

the arctic monkey got some good pushers that went to buy a few thousand cds on the first week , went straight in the charts , everyone want to know what the fuss is all about , they get tv/radio slots because they got straight in the charts & then everyone wanna buy their cds .
this is a well known marketing strategy ,every good maketing team with a big budget does it .

anyway , the best show i have seen was prodigy in london .

Best show recently was The Olivia Tremor Control at the Bowery Ballroom here in NYC. They were just so alive. I think that's the key. If you are so into what you do, to the point where your belief in what you're doing goes beyond the point of conviction, where you're just there doing it... you can transmit this feeling of joy - no matter if your songs are about sadness and death - you can transfer a feeling of the celebration of being alive to the audience. That is the ultimate live experience.

In the past I had this happen with:

The Spaceheads

(Damn, I can't think of anymore right now. I'll post more as the come to me)

Hearing Matthew Fisher's organ work on "A Whiter Shade of Pale" in the backseat of a station wagon while my mother parked next to the giraffe marker at the Peoria Zoo when I was a little kid. It was a cub scout field trip.. it was the coolest thing I had ever heard up to that point.

Ableton’s engineers are hard
at work developing code that will allow our software to predict the future, but we don’t
anticipate having this available until at least the next major release.
