Greetings.. serious question...

Post by Gil Grissom » Sun Jan 29, 2006 10:03 am

i'm a long time user of FL studio... 4th time demo user of live...

now i'm mainly a sampler, and i produce hip hop music... what i like to do is, in fl, i load a sample in the FL slicer, then within the slicer, i load up zero x beatslicer whcih allows me to non=destructively chop my samples (set slices). then allows me to save a template, that loads within fruity slicer containing the slices so i can trigger the sample note by note and sequence it with ease...

also, on the fruity slicer, it has a handy time stretch on it, amonsgt other tools on the sampler....

is there anyway to replicate this method in Live 5? as far as that routine goes? setting slices of a sample, easily sequencing the slices on a pattern-like grid note by note according to slice markers?? and timestretching of a specific sample?

if not since the fruity slicer is a .dll file am i able to load it up as a vst? within abelton?

If it's a VST and not some proprietary FL format (I never used FL so I don't know), you should be able to load it up in Live, figure out where the FL vsts are located and go to Live preferences and set plugins/vst plug-in custom folder to where to FL vsts are, rescan plugins or just close and re-open live, if it works you can then select it from the live vst plugin browser.

If you want to spend a little on getting this feature, check out phatmatic pro which is quite awesome.

There is also a freeware version of phatmatic, it's around somewhere but I can't find a working link, google around for 'phatmatic' and you should find it somewhere, it wont slice anything but it will play rex1 format loops.

I've been a huge Phatmatik pro advocate, however, yesterday I got into the slicer in EnergyXT - and it's fucking awesome! You can do big setups, and, afaik, use program changes to switch between the setups - it's a very elegant system, and editing is a bit untraditional, but VERY easy.

This is the VST you're looking for, pretty new but works amazing. Free demo to try out and some flash demos at the website.

or just get energy XT - It's cheaper, it's a FULLY MODULAR HOST, and it has a fully functional sampler+sequencer built in... whatever ;)

Yup, I use Energy as well, the amount of stuff packed in it for the price is staggering, it can be just about anything you want it to be, but that power comes at the cost of a steep learning curve for folks not used to working with modular hosts.
