New Mac User Daw Optimization

Post by spacesuit » Tue Jan 31, 2006 3:55 pm

I'm a new mac user. I just got an IMac Intel 1.83 G5 to complement my PC DAW. My question is, do I need to optimize this mac for music? If so, where can I find some sort of guide to set it up? Any suggestions? Where's the good Mac music sites? Also, where do I sign up for the Intel Duo Core Beta program?

at this moment there is no DAW supported for intelmac....Logic wil be in march...logic late feb.....
what u can use right now is garageband 3.
you can still use other unsupported Daw;s...but their performance will be really poor
stop talking.....start working...:)

Some apple techs recommend wiping the machine and doing a custom ground up OS install. This allows you to get rid of unwanted printer drivers and language localisations. Not really essential though.

OSX doesn't really need optimising but I'd make sure you not running any power saving features when running Live and make sure you have 5-10 GB free on your drive to allow space for swap files etc etc.

And yeah it isn't a G5 :)

It's a IMac 17" 1.83 Intel Duo Core, not a G5. My apologies.
...and I realize that nothing works on it now and Live (my fav) will work in February. I'll be using my PC with Reason and VSTi's as a workstation SPDIF'd into the Mac for a long time, I'm sure.
So turn off the power saving features. How can I turn off the widgets?
What about plugins, when they work. For instance, would I run NI's FM7 in Live as a VST or as an Audio unit? Which would make the Mac happier?
