I have been stock piling single cycle waveform samples and making most of my synths/pads/basses in simpler with a few effects lately. It isn't what I would call a 'powerhouse' synth. But its simple to use, and other a slight prefrence for envelopes with more than an ADS and R, and maby finer detune (I'm tuning single waveforms here, i have to tweak things in soundforge sometimes) it can make most sounds you can think of. I havn't realy used operator much, I get angry with FM, everyone that says they understand it lies (FM synthesis in general, the math gets so out of hand so quickly), and I acualy own fm7, how many fm synths can I possibly need hehe. But, I imagine machinate would be better to ask about it, its a great synth with some realy neat features. Its not free, and its not a subtractive synth, but check out the demo.

As far as subtractor, I dunno, spend a few hours learning to use synthedit and you can make youself a much cooler vsti (maby not as cpu friendly, but subractive synths dont each much cpu in general anyway). Dont get too hung up on finding an exact replicate of another synth, its usualy not a good use of time. Just track down a cool synth, check out kvr, do a search for free vsti's. Find one you seem to like initialy. Spend like, a week, a few hours a night, just making new sounds with it. Think of it as if you just bought some expensive hardware keyboard. We all tend to accumilate hundreds of free (or at least un-paid for) vst's. If you spend some time learning to use it like you would an acual instrument, youd be suprised how awesome some of them realy are.

Operator, ABL Pro......
Not free, but they are at least 10 times better then the subtractor.
The subtractor is a toy anyway. The only thing making it "special" is perhaps the second filter.
Now the maelstrom... thats a different story

If you're on mac. Try automat. The best free synth you'll ever find.

Try Green Oak Crystal: http://www.greenoak.com/crystal/

Different from subtractor, but I'm sure the majority of the features are there. Plus a ton of way better ones.
