Here's the scene:
If I'm in the arrangement view and I want to insert a clip between two other clips and it goes over into another section, why does it move the other clip? Why can't the clip thats been there all along just stay there and there be a little silent overlap?
I got into having to try and resize a section that got pushed and it had a pickup on it, so it was thrown out of time... I finally gave up trying to put it back in place a just re-recorded the section.
Maybe there's a lock feature that I'm missing?...... I'll crack the book.

clips moving in arrangement view
am i understanding you correctly?
if you paste a new clip somewhere where there are already clips, it doesn't move the previous ones. but the new paste will overwrite them for it's entire length. the clip which is getting it's beginning "trimmed" just gets it's position marker moved accordingly
but it's timing in the overall scheme of things is not changed

Hmmmmm, not sure if you're getting my drift, or maybe I'm drifting too much...LOL
If I have two clips in the Arrangement, I slide a clip between them, but there's a bit more than I need on the end, so I move the end back and then, well, the end clip slides out of it's place and I've had a heck of a time getting that clip back to where it should be. Maybe it's the grid resolution?
The end clip will snap back, but not to where it should, and for some reason, this was a pickup phrase on the and of 3 in the preceding bar, I set the punch-in to the full bar, but I only ended up with a partial bar. It would be easy if it were a full bar so that it could just go to the barline and all would be well.

I've been too busy playing and processing my song to research it further, but they do move and move out of place.....
what am I missing here?

yeah, maybe i just don't get what you're trying to explain.
if you paste that middle clip in there, the third one shouldn't MOVE, it should just have it's beginning snipped and it's new start point is wherever the #2 (pasted) clip ends.
then if you drag the end of #2 back, it will leave a gap before #3. but then just drag the start of #3 to close the gap (not MOVING #3)
try this: take any long audio clip. copy a short 2nd clip and paste it into the middle of the first one. now there appear to be 3 clips.
now drag the left bracket of the 3rd clip towards the left. you will end up erasing the pasted 2nd clip as you drag past it. continue dragging and when you get all the way to the left side you will have essentially restored the intact original audio before the paste operation, because all of this is non-destructive and the 1st and 3rd "clips" are just representations of the same audio file, with different start and end position markers which tell live when and where to start playing the file

my clip 3 in this instance ended up being out of place and there was seemingly no way I could get it back into position. Yeah, I dragged it left to restore all of it, but it still wouldn't line up where I recorded it.
Sure, I got the whole "points to your audio" deal.
No matter, I simply recorded the part again. I think in the future, if I'm going to comp a track, maybe I'll just use 2 tracks so things stay neat until I'm ready to consolidate.
