Sometimes when im playing, and i ,for example, press play on a whole scene, the program glitches VERY BAD, and the cpu usage jumps to like 100-200%!!!!!!!

no u dont need the new bug fix cos it dont fix sh1t... (well apart from the arpeg fx bug)

i have now more or less given up using live 503 as a result of these performance issues. i dont have that good a laptop (G4 800mhz/640ram) but ableton have done such a bad job at making live 5 stable and reasonable with CPU resources that i can no longer be bothered to try and fix it... not only that but they have done nothing for all the ppl who have reported this in several threads:

http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31394

i hate logic cos its so unintuitive, but cant be bothered with live cos its far too buggy and no one at abe hq seems to give a monkeys.

i sincerely hope they do a better job with 5.2, cos otherwise they might find no one buys live 6.

let me repeat that for anyone from abe who might be able to read (let alone program)

I SINCERELY HOPE THEY DO A BETTER JOB WITH 5.2, COS OTHERWISE NO ONE WILL BUY LIVE 6.

sorry, i guess its not very helpful but u might have realised there is no current solution to the cpu spikes and audio drop outs. i have tried defrag / onyx unix maintenance tools / stripping down the system to bare bones... so i seriously doubt it is something to do with my g4 cos i run logic 6 no probs... (even tho i hate it). all i can say is keep ur fingers crossed for 5.2 and in the meanwhile if like me u can no longer bang ur head with frustration then switch to another DAW.
as painful as it might seem, it saved me a trip to the hospital...

which version of live are you running? Try 5.03 if you haven't already, it stabilized my system a fair bit. You don't have to uninstall the version you're using, they cohabitate very well :)

try deleting the asd files for the clips on that scene.

Do you get this on v4 or is it just 5? Dude I dunno if it'll help but I've noticed something weird too so far in 5 (all versions) and I'm sure it's been mentioned in a few threads before too.

When I'm working on a track I usually start in session before things get large and move over to arrangement view. Now it gets weird - when a set/track gets quite sizeable (I'm generally doing 40-50 channel mixdowns for example), I've noticed that when I load Live and play the track the first time thru, or trigger sections via the locators, the CPU goes fookin beserk. Like 1000%. Maybe that banging on the side of the case is my P4 blowing out of it's slot

But the second time I play it back it's almost like the the audio has finally been buffered properly and will now play back correctly. Like I said I really don't know if this helps, or even relates, to your issue - but either way there is definitely major application inefficency going on somewhere that needs fixed in 5.2.

what is your cpu meter at before launching this scene?

Does this scene happen to contain a clip that starts playing a cpu hungry virtual instrument or plugin?

live does tend use more cpu the first time it starts running signal thru a cpu hungry effect or instrument. often times this just means you are asking too much of your cpu and have to bounce some instruments or effects to audio.

The cpu meter, before i launch this scene, is on 30-40 %---working very very well-..

And no, this scene does not launch any instrument or plugin..........

Now Live 5.03 has been running mostly fine on my machine. But occasionally I get the big percentages and all the sound gets seriously weird.

But what I do get all the time when I first open the track is that Live takes some time to settle down. The CPU bar is fine, but the audio is somehow echoey, with some audio tracks double triggering. Now this settles down after a minute or so on bigger tracks, and less so on smaller tracks.

I reckon its related to the hard drive activity. In the few few moments of loading a song all the audio clips are being scanned so that their waveforms can be displayed in arrange view. You can see the HDD light flickering so you know it is doing something. When the HDD light goes off all stuttering disappears.

I now wait for all the activity to stop before I press play now.

its even more frustrating to think that with so many ppl answering this post, ableton dont have anything to say!!!!

tech support / forum support it is time for you to show that you actually have a reason for being employed at ableton.

i understand it is not easy to get to the bottom of this problem because none of the symptoms are easily reproducible. However, the number of posts concerning this issue deserves attention. I sincerely doubt we are all making this up and there really is no problem at all (!?!)

At least let us know that you are looking into it!!!!
Currently it just seems that you are ignoring this problem.

I am DJing with LIVE 5.03 and
after approx 1 hour i have similar issues like you descirbe.
I have a 1.5 GHz Powerbook.
I posted about these issues here and some guys of Ableton (Alex?)
takes care of this problem but until now nothing changed and
last week i tried again and it was the same after 70 minutes.
I hope some day they will solve this problem.
