Saved by the crash...

My roommate was recording last night and Live crashed. She had been recording with 3 mics doing guitars and vocals with her songwriting buddy.

She hadn't saved the set. They were recording song after song, so the file was getting large. When she relaunched Live she got the dialog box that acknowledged the crash and allowed her to reopen the set. She did that and Live rebuilt the tracks and saved the day.

To my chagrin she hadn't been recording on my external FW800 drive. I think she's been doing that a lot and as a result my G5 has been a bit choppy lately.

She wasn't 100% sure if she had saved any of the session before the crash, yet Live had rebuilt the tracks and all of the audio was there. Is this the case? Am I correct in thinking that Live is saving your work to some capacity even though you have not saved it yourself?

As regards to recording large files directly onto the internal drive, which in general is something to avoid, how does this effect a DJ recording their entire Live set as they perform it? In general should a DJ always use a FW drive? Or is it acceptable to record long sets directly to your internal drive providing you remedy your drive afterward? What remedies do you recommend for a drive that has been abused in this manor?

In OSX we have disc utility and in PC I suppose you can defragment your disc. Is there anything else I can do to help my computer?
