Can Live handle load? Is it like Acid? etc.

Post by swanusa » Fri Feb 10, 2006 6:39 am

I have been trying to look and use different platforms. I use Rewire and VSTs alot. I also do live recording. On a PC, I have Cubase SX and Reason. Works perfectly! I recently got a Powerbook and I have been struggling to choose the host software for it. I was looking for software which would work on both Mac and PC so that I could use the same project files on both without worrying about having to import and export.

I tried Cubase SX on Mac. The newest 3.1 version works fine but Rewire simply sucks! It's not at all CPU efficient. Then I tried Logic pro. Rewire is ok on it but not good enough and that's why I'm looking into Live now.

How good is Live when you use a lot of VSTs, can it handle good amount of load? I saw that Rewire works quite fine, do you guys have had any problems with it? How good is Live when it comes to audio recording, does it sound pro quality? Is Live more like Acid?

the amout of vst you can use depends more on your pc specs than the soft you use ,

Well on a PC, Acid gave me problems when I loaded it up with audio tracks. It would just freeze it. Cubase on the same PC can handle any amount of load. Is Live as solid as Reason?

Acid is a toy.

And no it's not like Acid, Cubase, Protools or whatever, Live is non-linear,
you don't play from left to right, you play here and now. As far as sound
quality it's up there with the best, technically no differences in sound
produced by Protools to Live.

Thanks for your replies guys. Let me just ask "one" question. I know Live is not like Cubase or Protools and is non-linear etc. but if I want to use Live as a regular host like Cubase or Logic, does it hold it's ground? If I want to record audio, use VST effects, use VST instruments, mix, does Live do a comparable job? Is it CPU efficient? Also, does it work the same on PC or Mac?

as of right now it runs somewhat better on pc. that will change with new intel macs and with upcoming updates.

rewiring audio into live from reason works really well. there can be some latency problems if you rewire midi into reason. it works better currently, IMO, to use the reason sequencer

in tha arrangement view live behave like any other sequencer.
when it comes to edit and cutting samples and final mastering better use a wave-editor program like sound forge or whatever you like.

I have an Intel 2.8Ghz system with 1G of memory. I recently did a song that used 10 instruments (no loops) with piles of effects processors. I think it's using 5 instances of the synth Operator. When the song is at it's busiest, I'm using about 45-50% of CPU. Of course, if you are sequencing some of those parts, you can save CPU by "freezing" the tracks leaving even more head room.

I suggest you download the demo and give Live a try. Live is much more of an "instrument" than a loop arranger and it is easy to learn, but very deep if you want to go to the next level of production. Of course for live performance theres is nothing else like it.
