recording problem

I recently tried to record some guitar parts over instrumental track i did, only problem is that as i record the guitar, it also record the whole song, so in the end i end up with my guitar plus the other tracks recorded into the same one.
I've tried various routing modifications, i always get the same problem.

Describe your procedure for multi-tracking...

Are you using an audio interface?

Are you using headphones?

After selecting your audio interface from Live's preferences:

1) create an audio track

2) select an input from the audio interface in Session view's I/O

3) select 'monitor in' on the designated track

4) arm the track for recording

5) set your gain, get a sweet level and you're ready to hit the record button on the transport and away you go

my multi track session is like this

audio track 1: track on with I recorded the drums

midi track 2 : track on wich i have a synth lead I did using the Operator on Live

audio track 3 : track on wich I am trying to record a guitar.

Wether i use headphones or not I still get the same problem, basicaly once track 3 is armed and ready for recording I press record and then play and record my guitar part with the drums and synth playing the headphones or trhough my speakers. the problem is Track 3 reocrds not only the guitar parts I am playing, It also records what is playing on the other tracks.So i end up with guitar, drums and synth recorded on to the same track.
I just can't work it out, i've tried lots of different combinations nothing works.All I need is to be able to record guitar tracks without recording my whole session onto the one track every time.

i can't see how this is even possible solely with ableton's settings. which leads me to believe that somewhere in your soundcard settings that the playback audio is getting mixed in with your input. is there some sort of virtual patchbay for the routing? what card are you using

my soundcard is part of my motherboard wish is a K8UPGRADE-NF3, the soundcard on my motherboard is a 7.1 channels AC'97 Audio.
as far as i know i'm not using any virtual patchbay.

so your guitar is going in how? via a microphone into the 1/8" mic input on your motherboard?

exactly, its going trhough a preamp first to boost the signal and then into the motherboard input.
think my motherboard and/or sound card might be kind of crap, i can't realy change the routing on the sound card

well, maybe there are some settings in the drivers. if there's not a special driver program, have a look at least in the control panel audio settings.

i can't say much about the pitfalls of onboard audio w/ live, as i've never gone that route

aye well i've been doing some asking around and sush, and it seems it might be my sound card, it being quite basic and just integrated in the motherboard.
I might go for a new sound card. thx for your help up to here anyway
