Hijack Audio into Live from any source

Post by crawford » Mon Feb 13, 2006 9:29 pm

I'm an avid Audio Hijack Pro user by the company Rogue Amoeba. It dawned on me that Live should utilize this technology, so that you can sample the audio from anything running inside the OS, such as iTunes, or DVD Player, and be be able to drop it into your project right then and there, without having to open and close multiple apps. Now that's LIVE.

You can do that without anything but your soundcards mixer applet, just make sure the audio is routed so the input picks it up and hit record.

Just as I thought, it's not that easy. That's why I'm posting this as a feature suggestion...

HOW???

not on any Mac I'm using. It would be really helpful if you'd explain yourself. Or maybe you can't because this isn't currently possible?

You didnt mention before now that you are on a mac, this is how you do it in windows without any fancy extra programs.

Been a while since I did it, but open your mixer applet (Doubleclick speaker icon) select options menu, then properties.

Put checkmark in 'recording' hit ok button, now you have controls for selecting the recording input, now select 'Stereo mix' checkbox and close mixer applet.

Open any program that can record, start something that generates sound, cd player, winamp, whatever, and hit record, voila... magic.

that will only work if you're using the onboard sound card though

also, the thing about soundflower is it will work in live - you can choose it as an input on a track in live which is awesome

Soundflower does not pull up as an option as an input in Live for me, and I do have it installed. The options are: Reason, Resampling, A Return, B Return. I've even got Soundflower selected in Live's preferences as the Default input, and Soundflower selected as OS X's default Input. What the hell am I not doing right? this is pissing me off.

hmm strange...I dont use Live on what is now my partners powerbook any more so I cant really remember but i did use it a bit when i did - do you maybe have to set it up in audio/midi setup to be the main input/output? I do remember seeing it in there and having to do something

she's still on jaguar too, dont know if that matters....but I used it alot and really liked it - really want something similar for PC

just in case you missed it:
How To Use Soundflower

Soundflower presents itself as one of two audio devices (2ch / 16ch). The 2-channel device is sufficient for most situations.

To send the output of one application to another, select Soundflower as the output device in the first application and Soundflower as the input device within the second application.

If an application does not allow you to specify audio devices, you can make Soundflower the default input or output device inside the Sound panel in the System Preferences, or with the Audio MIDI Setup utility application.

The 16-channel device is provided for more complex routing situations, and can be used with more than two applications simultaneously if the applications support audio routing to any channel, as Max/MSP does.

Note that Soundflower's audio channels represent a global audio space. If more than one application is sending its output to the same channel, the audio will be mixed. If you want an application to send and receive audio through Soundflower, (for instance using Max/MSP to manipulate and return another application's audio) you must send and receive the audio on different audio channels or a feedback loop will be created.

If you are hearing clicks or breakups, try increasing the buffer size of both applications (set within each application).
just thinking - do you have to go to "input/output" settings in live's prefs and enable it?
