Fix Live 5 before even thinking about Live 6, dudes.
Amen to fixing Live 5. Testing my system I set up Logic Pro 7 and Ableton to have the same buffers and ;atency (basically anyway) and was able to run many more instances of the same plugins in Logic than in Live. Logic showed no stuttering, lost timing. etc. None of the plugins I'm using are listed as buggy in the thread to my knowledge (NI Battery, Synful Orchestra, etc).
That said, Live is FAR more useful to me as a programmer and I'm pining for it to work right. I'm also interested in the fix we're waiting for being free. I've been paying since version 2.0 and I would like to think my upgrade to 5 was worth the money. That seems to be the case, so I'm pleased about that.
It's easy to see the potential for Live, but hard to deal with the "still beta" feeling you get using 5. I'm not trying to run 22 songs. I'm just doing album work for clients and remixes, one song at a time, and I get stuttering audio as soon as the mix gets good. Freezing is also more effective in Logic (if you compare the CPU drain post freezing tracks in Logic against freezing Live tracks.)
I'm willing to wait for a good version. Don't rush good ideas into half-assed buggy implementation.

True, but clips falling out of sync does not fall into the underperformance catagory. I didn't mention that, or the crashing, or the occasional dissapearing menu, but I'm almost happier to live with those when they happen as they will (I believe) inevitably be addressed.
I am concerned mainly with (as you quite aptly coined it) underperformance. Thaks for helping me clarify that.

Let us not forget the fact that using Live as a rewire host doesn't work properly either.
1. There is always a discernible time lag when using Live to control a rewire slave.
2. There is an undetermined time lag when using PDC with rewire inputs. You cannot use Reason with Live and have PDC on without suffering from timing problems.
3. Negative values of track delay does not work properly with rewire outputs.
I think my main problem with Live is that I bought it to function as a DAW to use as a rewire host. It is not there yet.

And that u can't even record midi in cycle mode without a crash is the unbelievable SupaDupaBugg! I have never experienced something like that with any other sequencer I have worked with! The stability issues of Live 5 are awful and I can not recommend the software to anyone!
Do not misunderstand me: I love the Idea of Live, I love the Interface, I love the sound of lots of FX inside of Live, but this software is, like a lot of you already said here, totally useless in it's current state!
Why do you call a software Live, when it is unusable in live conditions! Fix that! Allow midi and audio recording without crashes, allow starting plugs and changing plugs without crashing or crackling when the sequencer runs. This is not useful! At the moment this is still a buggy beta! Not a full version woth 500 bucks! Sorry to say that, but this is not only my opinion.
I am full of hope, that I can use this software one day in the near future! Otherwise I'd have to return to Cubase or Logic.

Sadly, I would bet that Live 5 is becoming a memory and that the feature set and release date for Live 6 are already set.
Live 3 released - AES Convention 2003
Live 4 released - Summer NAMM 2004
Live 5 released - Summer NAMM 2005
Live 6 released - see the pattern?
We're on the treadmill at this point.

Sorry, but you misunderstood me totally. I bought live because the others are not able to offer a realtime jam session recording process. But at the moment Live does also not offer that. And that is the main reason for Live! If this can not be fixed it does not matter which software you use for instable classic songwriting procedures! So you can better take the more stable software! Perhaps not logic, but think of DP or Cubase. They are stable, to me!djsynchro wrote:
I'd be very interested to see you perform a live set with either one of those
Hopefully this will never happen to me, because the cool guys from ableton will fix all these awful bugs in the near future!
what annoys me is the lack of responsibility by ableton. they are supposed to deliver an app which works (within reason) because u pay for it.
currently i cant use live 5 to write a whole track or perform. when i use logic i can because the program can do such simple things as playing back an audio file without stuttering or other dicrepencies which are unacceptable (MIDI, timing, cpu spikes, audio glitches)...
if anyone wants to play "live" then should try burnt toast by twerk // ok it can be abit buggy but it works better than live v.5 and it is FREE.
i would be curious to hear how many ppl are managing to do live performance with live in its current state...

No need to get you panties in a bunch there - I read the bugs and problems because maybe I can help - maybe instead of calling it a bug it's just a feature problemsupster wrote:
and consistantly the same few wankers without the problem come in to either gloat or imply that all the people that do have the problem are at fault. its not bad enough that you cant finish projects or gig, you then have somebody buzzing around like that
a stfu is in order once in a while i think. thats all.
.
I don't mean to gloat or imply it's your fault - just maybe think about it differently
So yes, my question was and still is what's wrong with the actual program
if your computer spits STFU at you all the time then you do have problems - good luck with that?
we all have problems, but does that mean you can't finish a song or perform live? I'm curious besides Reason or FruityLoops what major DAW is 100% bug free? And with those few bugs who is capable of gettign the job done?

Okay, then tell me why does this software allow me to record midi in cycle mode for some minutes, and after that it crashes without any reason! I have never experienced a crash with midirecording in cycle mode in any other application! This job is really basic!djadonis206 wrote:

when you say cycle mode, what do you mean?
do you mean looping in arrange mode?
when i record midi parts that i intend to overdub on, i like to use a blank clip.
so, i loop the part of the arrangement i'm going to write my midi part on, then go to the session view. I make a blank midi clip and make it the length i want it to be and then record into it with overdub enabled. never had a problem doing that.
i don't see why you would have a problem doing it right into arrange view either, i just don't do it like that.
anyway, i'm just curious because i don't understand what you mean by "cycle mode."
