Are you sure you have VSTs installed and working?
You've chosen the proper directory in the Live preferences?

I've managed to assemble a huge number of VSTs over the last couple of years - when I tried to use them in Live scanning my VST folder crashed Live every time.

I just picked a few good ones and copied those to my Ableton Folder. I scanned from there with no problem.

Incidentally - can you arrange your VSTs into sub folders like you can in Cubase?

Just create a C:\vst or whatever. It can be anywhere.
If you stick stuff under Ableton's folders you always run the risk of them screwing up and deleting your stuff when you update.
