Should I upgrade to Live 5?
Hello All,
I'm currently running a soft studio with Live 4.1 as the hub on my Imac G5 (Tiger - 10.4.4). Recently, I purchased a Yamaha 01X to improve my mixing capabilities within Live and was going to upgrade to 5 at the same time.
However, although I don't post much, I'm an avid reader of this forum and my general feeling from here was that upgrading to 5 would of in fact been a bad idea. They are a hell of a lot of posts regarding bugs and other operating problems for those using 5 and I didn't want to suffer from the same issues. Because of this, I've waited for the next update in the hope that all the previous bugs have been sorted.
Now, that 6 is upon us and there's support for intel based Mac's (although mine isn't), I'm assuming most of these bugs are fixed, right?
Although its a pretty subjective question, I guess what I'm asking is - Is the time now to upgrade, or should I stick to 4?
Any suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Jake.

this is a subjective answer by some one who feels both let down and ripped off by ablescum.
I could not DISAGREE with YOU more IMHO.
Live 5 works fine here.
Doesn't crash and has minimal problems if any .
Considering I have my laptop on everyday for 5-6 hours and LIVE NEVER craps out on me I cannot agree with your ABLESCUM comment.
Which is about as far from the truth as a troll free post can get.
My aren't the wings of butterflies beautiful and do they not make wonderful perturbations.....

A bit unfair.
Yeah,
to be fair Justin, I think the ABLESCUM comment is slightly harsh. I appreciate your situation but have you actually contacted them to ask for maybe a free download of v4?
Then you would get a perfectly bugfree version just without the extra features.
Has the 5.2 update not sorted out of the issues that the original v5 release had?

5.2 not out yet... as far as i know
5.03 is frustratingly full of bugs and is too heavy on cpu.
have been using live since v.1 and v.5 is by far the least stable release by ableton to date.
altho, i'm glad to hear it works for some ppl... i'm sorry to say that it does not work very well at all for a significant number of ppl.
very annoyed bcos ableton not doing much to fix v.5 instead seem to be jumping from a sinking ship and sayin hey dont worry guys v.6 is out soon.
not really interested in using v.4, am after some of the features in v.5... which i have paid for!

Justin is telling it how it is... (Tings R bad)
Performance at the moment is really poor. Even Midi is pathetic really
I have posted about the problems I have with it and just get abuse from Ableton Ass kissers WTF thats about I don't know.
But I'm with justin here
Its not just that live is crashing very much but Performance @15% CPU All audio clips no FX or Plugs feels like 95%.It doesn't perform right now no matter what you do. (Wait for it...the ableton ass kisser to start slagging me off I'm sure some of the people on the forum are on abletons payroll)
Wait for 5.2 see if its fixed if not maybe wait for the next version.
You can't be expected to wait 6 months for a decent version after buying it the day it came out. This has put me off now and I won't upgrade again if this version isn't fixed first.Ableton have let me down on this one it should have been delayed and Live 6 should have been delayed (It should not even have been mentioned right now) ...

5.0.3
So Kinetic, your basically saying don't upgrade to 5.0.3 yeah? Just wait until 5.2 comes out and see what the reaction is?
Beacuse I'm purely soft based, freeze is my main concern here because I don't sample a huge amount, I run a lot of plug's simultaneously which is obviously demanding when coupled with my 01X. Sure the other features would be beneficial but freeze is the one. However, I simply don't want to have to go through consistent bug issues which will stifle my working.
Any other thoughts from anyone?
Jake.

I can only tell you what I am having diffiiculties with.
Right now I can load the program play about in it...but I am constantly finding bugs and thats it...
My Opinion if this is how it is forget it...See if they can get this version working first
Why is it so slow when I am using 15% CPU See I cannot really use much in the way of soft vsts with my performance right now and to top it all off I cannot use my hardware properly cause the Bar Stewards ain't got decent midi working properly Externally yet.
See my post in the bugs on performance wait for ableton to reply with a bug fix.
Its amazing on paper and I love some of the new features.
Shit I love Live ...But only if it works!!!!!!!!
But this ain't good enough and I feel ripped
Get the demo see if its ok on your system
By the way I am not sure about the freeze function either better check with others on that especially if it is a main priority

Demo.
The dempo seems to be the best option, and to be honest - the more I think about it I don't why I just haven't tried it out yet.
Cheers for the advice one and all.

well, there are a lot of people who are having problems, and there are a lot of people who are not.
I will tell you this. Live5 uses more cpu because it has more features.
Live 5 runs with no problems on my system, and i have to say it, on *most* sytstems.
do download the demo and see if it works on yours.
