HELP - Recorded Dj Mixes Have Holes In them
HELP - Recorded Dj Mixes Have Holes In them
hey guys. problem ive noticed.. when i record a full hour mix into the arrangement view, upon playback / mixdown, i notice, entire parts of my mix are just gone. like i would have 1 song going, mixed into another, but when i see the arrangement view later, there is no mix there... instead gaps between my tracks???? i cant figure this out its really pissing me off tho..
would this have anything to do with temporary files, or decoded cache files ?
help would definitely be appreciated im trying to make a new demo thanx.

well, its on playback because in the arrangement , ican see the gap, example in a mix thereshould usually be two clips overlapping u kow, but instead theres a hole, and the clip is like aabruptly cut off. really i dont understand.. i noticed from listenin to the render that my mix just stoped in places, then oopened up the live als file of my set and i can see it..
fuck. no clue. this disappoints me. im gonna try another mix. but can u see how annoying this problem is... been like 3 times.
at first i thought it was me fuckin up... now i know its not that easy to fuck up.
ill try again... all my clips are warped. i always use the warp straight from here mode on em.

Hey Jessie,
I was getting the same problem as you, and I think it only happens when either:
a) I jump through a track while I'm playing it (using the "Scrub" thing by clicking in the bottom half of the soundwave)
or..
b) I switch on and off the loop on a track while I'm playing it.
Were you doing either of those to the tracks that "go missing"?
There must be some way of getting around this problem?

yes man i did jump places... and i do loop... this is definitely a problem... doesnt make a diference when playiing out, the problem is tryin to record a set.. its fuckin pissing me off... i tried again a test this weekend, but i didnt do much except for playing tracks and making sure when i viewed my set in the arrangement after that everything was there..
im glad we share the same problem cuz i thought i was crazy for a bit...
keep posting here and let me know if u fix the problem or not. i thought it had to do with temp files at first but im sure its not that any more

I think the problem is with how we are doing the mixing.
Surely others would have had this problem, because it is fairly obvious. (sets don't record properly!)
I'm going to go away and read the manual on how to record a DJ set with loops, and see if that helps!
Have you searched this forum for people with the same problem?

Two more questions to try to pin down the problem:
What version of Live are you using? I've just upgraded to 5.0.3 and haven't had the problem yet (only after doing a quick test though)
And, how many tracks (in Ableton's session view) are you using? Are you giving each mp3 it's own "track" in Ableton (so you have to scroll horizontally to see them all)?
I was having the "gaps" problem when I was doing this. So far I've had no trouble when I arrange my mp3s like this: http://i1.tinypic.com/o7isk4.jpg (sorry for the quality!)
Just load all the mp3s you want to use into Track 1 in Ableton (vertically), then highlight them all and use Ctrl+drag to put a copy of all of them into Track 2. Here you basically have two "decks" and you can mix between them.

the arrangement view no longer always accurately records what you do in session re: moving the start marker and loop braces as you mix.
for sure. this is (i think) related to the changes made in version 5 to start marker behavior and theh "orange dot" .. which theoretically enabled more flexible better DJ mixing (and definitely does to a point) ... but ..
in actual practice its broken. this is just one more example of why many of us are concerned that ableton the plot on quality control in this program
we are nervous that many of these things will never really be 100% fixed in version 5, and may just carry over to version 6. because not only have they not made much of a dent in many of them over the past 8 months, but in some cases it strongly seems they are not even fully aware of the extent of some of them

use any version 5 release.plazzTT wrote:What version of Live are you using? I've just upgraded to 5.0.3 and haven't had the problem yet (only after doing a quick test though)
set up two clips in adjacent tracks in session view
hit record, and start mixing them.
now try the following things:
- use the scrub marker in clip view to jump around in one of the tracks as you record
- move the start marker in one of the clips either by dragging or CTRL clicking in the waveform
- click on the loop braces in one of the clips, and move it around in the waveform .. make it jump, halve it, double it .. etc ...
do this for a while. remember what it sounded like when you did it
now play the arrangment

I had the same problem with a recorded mix and I remember that during the mix I had a small loop marked at the start of the track and then pressed the loop button to turn off the looping on that clip to allow it to go beyond the end of the loop brace and play the rest of the track. It happened several times during the mix.plazzTT wrote:b) I switch on and off the loop on a track while I'm playing it.

I'll not be using Live 5.0.2 like that again. when using 4 I used to do things differently funnily enough.
I have 5.0.2 and 5.0.3 installed on separate PCs now, and I'm having no problems with 5.0.3, trying as much as I can to make it mess up its arrangement view.
5.0.2 makes a holy mess easily enough. If you play a track (click on record first), and at, say 5:1:1 click "Set" on the Loop Position, and then Set the Loop Length after 2 or 4 (whichever). Leave it loop two or three times, and then switch off the Loop Switch. Playback continues okay, but if I stop recording, and go into arrangment I find that the track just disappears at the point I turned off the Loop Switch.
5.0.3 *seems* to work so far (*touch wood*)
