Mackie Control Support
Mackie Control Support
I think this would make a great controller for live...any plans to support? Do Ableton people post replies here that often?
Thanks,

I wonder if the Kenton Control Freak controller would work for Live.

Mackie Control support announced?
I saw that Mackie Control support in Live was announced at NAMM a few months ago!
When will this be happening, in the next 2.x update?

Hi,
support for Mackie Control, HUI, and similar units will come at a point; as usual, I cannot say when. Indeed, these units cannot control Live in a satifactory way via the usual MIDI Mapping method. We have to do some programming for these boxes to work as well as they do for other DAWs.

that is lame on mackies part for not having thier interface send regular midi. That seems like such a simple and logical thing. The event ezbus at half the price does all that and more, and is a great controller for live (in a more traditional studio setting, whereas "live" my K station or (I wish I had a) Remote 25 rock).

Mackie Control support
Has there been any progress with support for the Mackie Control?
I want to buy for use with ProTools but its use with LIVE is a definitie factor in justifying it... will LIVE 3 support it?
if not would it be possible for a Max patch to translate?

Re: Mackie Control support
Sorry: not beyond what Live 2 does. Off the top of my head, I cannot say wich ones of the Mackie Control's components you can use with Live as of today, using the standard MIDI Map Mode procedure. My collegue Eduard should know, though. I'll ask him to respond.subbasshead wrote:Has there been any progress with support for the Mackie Control? ..will LIVE 3 support it?
You will not be able to use, for instance, the Mackie Control's ASCII displays to show the value of an effect control ("5 kHz"), simply because Live has no software interface for that.subbasshead wrote:..would it be possible for a Max patch to translate? :?:
Apart from this, I don't know. Eduard, please shed your light on this.

Hi,
You can currently only use the Mackie Control with Live.
The Baby HUI and HUI are not supported at all, as they send out a totally
different MIDI format than the Mackie Control.
With the Mackie Control you will be able to use :
- all knobs (including the transport knobs)
- the jog wheel (but note that you currently cant assign it to control Live`s song position)
- the poties (in relative mode only)
- the faders (including feedback)
And here is what currently doesnt work :
- the display
- feedback for the knobs
Te best is, if you just try it with Live for yourself and see if it is
usefull for your work or not.

i tried my logic/mackie control and basically live needs to have some sort of communication with it, as if i assign the volume on live to the faders, the faders jump to the middle position every time i move them therefore making it virtually impossible to mix. right now using that controller for live just plain sucks and is completely uninspiring. i really hope that abelton implelements support for the mackie comrol asap, as i really dont want to spend anymore money on midi controllers.
I agree that the moving fader support is screwed - in order to stop the faders from returning to the middle the application has to echo the fader message back to the Mackie.
The faders on the Mackie generate 14-bit pitch bend messages so this theoretically should work fine if you go into MIDI learn mode, move the fader, and select "Absolute (14 bit)" as the map mode.
However, it doesn't work - Live seems to generate a load of random-ish messages back out - here's a selection copied from MIDI OX on the PC when it's supposed just to be sending out pitchbend messages:
000E316B 1 -- E0 42 1B 1 --- Pitch Bend
000E316C 1 -- E0 00 00 1 --- Pitch Bend
000E316C 1 -- C0 1B -- 1 --- PC: Elec Cln Guitar
000E3177 1 -- E0 3F 1B 1 --- Pitch Bend
000E3177 1 -- E0 00 00 1 --- Pitch Bend
000E3177 1 -- BF 1A 00 16 --- Control Change
000E318E 1 -- E0 41 1B 1 --- Pitch Bend
000E318E 1 -- E0 00 00 1 --- Pitch Bend
000E318E 1 -- C5 1B -- 6 --- PC: Elec Cln Guitar
000E318E 1 -- E0 41 1C 1 --- Pitch Bend
I think there's something seriously wrong with the pitch bend MIDI code.
However, it's not all bad news for the Mackie - you can use the v-pots to control the volume in Relative (Signed Bit) mode, use the buttons to trigger clips and use the jog wheel to control the cross fader. I'll report the pitch bend error in the 3.0 beta feedback and see whether it can be addressed.
Steve.

The bug that you`ve reported is only true for the Live3 betas . In Live 2.1.1 and below the feedback works correctly.
See http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 3446#23446 for my answer to the bugreport in the beta forum.
angelxperimentz:
Sorry, I forgot to point out that the "Logic Control" sends different MIDI message than the "normal" Mackie Control. So you can currently not use it with Live3. But there is a free firmware update available (see http://www.mackie.com/products/mackieco ... e_mcu.html ) to be able to switch between the Logic Control mode and the Mackie Control Mode.
Running your Logic Control in the Mackie Control Mode allows you to use it as descibed in my posting above.
