Please fill me in on what is probably a very basic issue regarding the nature of stereo.

this is simple, I think: make an "R" sound, rrrrrrRrrrRRRRRRrrrr... as loud as you can. You can fairly roar it, it takes much less pressure. "L" on the other hand, being tucked back in the mouth... lllLLLLlLlLLLLlll ...well, no comparison.

hope this helps.

I dunno, when I say "stereo files" out loud I emphasise the word Stereo more than files, so the R sounds louder.

What's on the left side of your studio that always has you looking that way? A window?

I know what krank is talking about, somewhat. On my mixer(mackie 1202) the right channel is always showing up in the led's, slighty higher. Even if I put Utility with the mono preset on the master channel in Live it still does it.

Here is were the "somewhat" comes in. My ears are not telling me that the right channel is louder even though my mixer is telling me that it is.

Exactly - I'm talking about visuals. Almost all my projects when viewed as waveforms have higher peaks in the top window (that's the right channel, right?). Seems true with some commercial tracks as well.

I may be daft, but please have mercy on me.

try swapping left and right cables along your signal chain to see what could be boosting the signal.

I have no idea if I've ever seen/heard this...

Does the Left channel sound louder if you're south of the equator?

Yes, but only to the right-handed.
