find live is killing groove in live drums?

Post by nous » Sat Feb 25, 2006 11:01 am

hi all. am kinda new to live and the forum so please be gentle.

play lots of disco and stuff with live drums and find that:
1. it is a complete pain warping tracks (auto warp always gets it wrong)
2. when i do they sound heavily quantised and it kinda ruins them.

have tried looping intros / outros and warping them by hand which sorts out the mix but then when i get to the main body of the track the tempo jumps around. would i be better cutting out the bits i want for mixing in say protools and load these in as seperate tracks?

cheers guys
:D

just thinking - wont be radically changin the bpm of tracks - maybe i could just warp the intro/outro loops and then playback the track itself with warp off?

change the warp mode to pitch instead of beats. that will it will slow down/speed up the file instead of stretching. or try complex warp mode.

Some type of music is just unwarpable, for example Cuban salsa.
Autowarping rarely works, unless for very, very, very "simple music"= dead
Warping does not kill the groove but you must do it manually which with some practice is quick and easy, search tips section , there are some excellent classes.
Cutting in PT is good idea, opens more creative options and let you collect some hot loops for future use.

have been loading 4 bar intro/outro in beat detective and locking it in on a grid. then live can auto warp the resulting quantised loop no prob. then i set the playback for the main file to 5.1.1. seems to work ok. do is still need to warp the main file? (track minus the into and outro)

seems like a lot of work... :(

For music that has a lot of variation within it, I find that it helps to let it autowarp first, then touch it up.

For instance, on songs played by human musicians, I tend to eliminate the measure warp markers, except the ones on, say, every fourth measure or every eighth measure.

That keeps the songs feeling "human" but keeps the tempo from going completely insane.

have tried that RS.

letting it auto warp, then moving start point, then setting up 4 bar loop and moving start point for this across track...

takes a while though..

what warp setting do you use? (repitch, beats?)

as no ones mentioned this...

you might also try moving the (unwarped) clip into the arrange window, setting the start point and then warping the track...you get a slightly different options menu here that offers to keep the original groove...

not 100% sure how this affect the results, but seems to work well for me...

this tip came from one of the warping tutorial/tips on another thread..

don't leave warp on while playing back or manipulating. This sometimes makes me take a double take me when I am playing back audio after recording a long performance.
