writing impulse patterns from the tr 909?

Post by steven seuling » Mon Feb 27, 2006 2:58 am

I want to set impulse to receive patterns via midi from my 909. i want to use the external write function to write patterns for the impulse from the 909. I got the 909 end covered, can anybody help with the ableton part?
thanks steve

Im just doing this off of memory because i sold my 909 ages ago but this should get you going:

01 make sure you have the 909 connected to the computer both ways (midi in and out) with the computer as master. Set up the 909 to receive its clock from ableton. You have to go into abletons preferences to make sure your set up to send midi clock to your midi interface. You do this because abletons midi timing is much more accurate than that of the 909.

02 If your synced up correctly and you start ableton you should get the 909 running in sync. You do not have to use the external instrument trigger if you do not want to because the 909 will be sending midi note information to ableton in its regular mode. If the notes on the 909s main sequencer and external trigger have different midi note assignments then it works out even better because this means you can run 2 sets sequences at a time. Put the track with your impulse sample on in into record so you can monitor your incoming midi notes.

03 I dont remember the exact note numbers the 909 sends so play a pattern in the 909 and see if you can hear the drum sounds playing in your impulse. If not stick a pitch shifter midi plugin (abletons internal note shifter) in front of the Impulse and change the values up or down until u can hear the 909 trigger the impulse samples.

Record your pattern as desired.

that should do the trick.

ohh before your record your pattern in ableton set abletons quantize value to your desired setting as the inputed notes will be quantized to that value (16th, 32nd, etc).

I use this same technic but with the Kord ER1 - the advantage of using the ER1 to do this is that the midi notes on the ER1 can be freely set so its easy to set up to play any midi note number in ableton.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,for replying.
By the Way This is Steve Centrific from Intellephunk in the purple city of minneapolis. We had so much fun when you were here a couple years back.
You let me know any time you would like to(or have time) to come back.

Now... back to the Matter at hand
I will try that this afternoon. Thanks.
What I had been thinking was.(maybe you can save me some time if Im wrong), I've used the external write fuction on the 909 to make patterns with a Nord 2
I only used midi out of the 909 back then.
Richie Hawtin said all his plastik man stuff had been done basically the same wayusing akai samplers. So I had hoped I would be able to use the impulse this
way too(or is there also another drum sampler plug-in you might suggest?).
Do you know what midi notes the impulse instruments are set to by default?
To simplifly I wanted to keep the 909 as the master and trigger drums in a sampler to go along with the imulse and soft synth stuff I got goin on.
Usually so far I've been using the 909 and syncing Ableton to it and just mixing the 2 with a dj mixer. Ableton is usally mostly just synths and a bit of percussion.
I recently purchased an motu 828 and an Allen and Heath mix wizard to basically bring the two worlds together. 8ins into ableton 8out to mixer,I really only use the Kick, snare, clap ,HHat, on the 909(plus a little 707here and there) and I'm more than happy to not always use those but I just want to still write mydrums the same way. Claude am I crazy can I make it work?

No problem any time. Trust me about the sync thing between the 909 and Ableton.
The 909 and most old midi gear are notorious for having drifting clock signals. If you want rock solid timing to mix from your best off with Abletons clock as the master. You don't want any drift if your trying to mix with records.

Glad it worked out for you.
Hopefully catch you next time im in the US. NOt sure when that will be but I will let you know if I do come back this year.

Regards.
