Cannot Sync Live W/ Roland Mc 909

Post by Ken Deep » Mon Feb 27, 2006 2:46 am

Anybody able to do this? I can send and receive data and record midi info into a clip but cannot remote start and stop and playback is silent.

There is also no sound from the clips piano roll either and I am able to see data coming through all active channels from the box.

I am using the m audio midi sport 2x2 and have the Box Out to In A and then the Out A going into the box In, all tied together via USB.

For a temp fix I just have the master outs of the box going to an audio trackline in A5 but still desire to sync up.

Device manager settings for the midi sport and delta audio 44 card are set to accept midi and working properly.

Just a brief settings reply would be great appreciated -

Ken.

I currentlly have ableton Live synced to my Emu XL7. Live also controls a bunch of other gear and the second set of 16 midi cahnnels on the XL7.

which do you want to be master The 909 or Live? Please describe your audio and Midi cabling in more detail. For audio please give the entire path from sond generation (the 909 and Live) to the output (studio monitors/speakers/headphones).

I have no problems syncing Live to my Korg EMX-1, including stopping and starting etc.

One has to be master, the other the slave. The master must transmit midi clock, the slave must be set up to receive midi clock.

Have you set up all this?

I am familiar with the master and slave modes and I want to be able to trigger the 909 from Ableton and record in midi loops etc from the 909.

The 909 manual is pretty vague and the midi fields provide the following settings:

Seq Sync =
Synce Mode - Master / Slave / Remote
Sync Output - On / off
Arpeggio Sync Output - On/off
Rps Trigger Quantize - 16th / Quarter / Real / etc
BPM Clock - On / Off

Midi Tx =

Transmit program change - On/off
Transmit Bank Select - On/off
Transmit Active Sensing - Type CC / Type Quick
Transmit Edit Data - On/off
Soft Through - On/off

Midi Rx =

Remote Keyboard Switch - On/off
Device ID - 17 thru 32
Receive Program Change - On/off
Receive Bank Select - On/off
Receive Exclusive - On/off

I've used mine with a Roland JX-305 (the same as an MC505 but with a keyboard and w/o the light beam).

Seq Sync =
Sync Mode - Slave or Remote
Sync Output - doesn't matter in this case
Arpeggio Sync Output - On
Rps Trigger Quantize - anything
BPM Clock - don't know that setting, JX doesn't have it

Midi Tx =

Transmit program change - doesn't matter
Transmit Bank Select - doesn't matter
Transmit Active Sensing - Type CC
Transmit Edit Data - doesn't matter
Soft Through - off

Midi Rx =

Remote Keyboard Switch - On
Device ID - doesn't matter

I turn these last 3 off because I don't want to change banks/patches with Live.
Receive Program Change - On/off
Receive Bank Select - On/off
Receive Exclusive - On/off

I know one cool thing about those synths' implementation is that the menu selections take place instantly, ie you can stay in the menu and toggle a value and watch its effect instantly without having to save the setting, exit the menu, observe the effect, go back and change it...

hope that helps, I haven't used the sequencer in my 305 for a while, it was mainly used as a controller until I got my Novation SL25 last week.

I have made the following changes and matched up with your suggestions, how about the live midi preference table?

My routing is :

909 Midi TX out to 2x2 midi sport in A
Midi 2x2 A Out to 909 RX in

Midi 2x2 sport to comp via usb

My 909 audio master outs at first where plugged into a line in my audio mixing board but as a temp fix I ran the master audio to an extra line in on my sound card so that I could get some audio coming through a Live track line and record loops but sucked because it is not synced but will work if needed.

In Live I'd just set the 909 to follow, sync, slave (if those are the three settings, I don't have Live in front of me) on the inputs and outputs.

Under Menu>System> the Synch Mode is set to Master, but I am still having problems configuring the 909 with Ableton. Detailed info on configuring would be appreciated while I hunt down a support number for Roland/AL.

-using interface Saffire Pro with no other midi instruments.
