Which software is it that's putting you off? The crossgrades seem relatively inexpensive when you consider the amount of work that's been put in to make them compatible.

For me, the only drawback is running cracked software. I simply won't do it on Mac. But that forces me to slimline my whole system which means I've been more productive. Being a student, I get good discounts on the software as well. For example, Macromedia studio 8 cost £79, MS Office cost about £70 and ableton crossgrade will be about £30. At least I can now support the developers who have helped me.
if it was 2 softs i had to upgrades it would not be a problem ,i have at least 30 expensive softs to upgrade .
at the begining i thought i would not have to upgrade but at the time i forgot we lived in a capitalist world .

i will absolutely be investing in a macbook pro....
in two years, maybe before (if my old g3 i book dies...i passed it on to my wife a few years ago, when it goes she gets my 12"g4)
i really try to stick with a 3 years minimum per computer purchase rule.
this will force me to wait for more advances to be released, which is a good thing.
but a macintel it will surely be at this point....
cheers

Racist

- not all vietnamese people have a virus - as a matter of fact I don't know any vietnamese people

let alone any with virus's - dude "My grandfather is half bi which make's me a quarter bi." - Eric Cartman from the "South Park is Gay" episode

wait...ok now i'm confused - i just commited to selling my trigger finger and I don't know how I feel about it

better to wait?

Post by marcus78 » Thu Mar 02, 2006 12:04 am

I just talked to my local apple dealer and they've actually told me not to buy the new intel macs. I made a similar mistake buying the first generation imac G5's. No sooner than a few months did new versions arrive at a lower cost. The word is that intel will be coming out with a 64 bit processor very soon. Probably will be standard in the towers first, but then who knows? I say hold off and save your money if you can because it's possible you might be able to buy a wicked computer for the same cost as the new intels. :D

Hmmm, it's a really tough decision. If I get a macbook pro that means I'll have to sell my pb g4, but I'd be able to get a wicked return on it if I sold it within the next couple of months. The extra speed boost is pretty significant if you look at the poewrbook g4s...

I'm still thinking on it.

thaats the stupidest thing i've ever heard. what apple salesmen would tell you such a thing? he must be the worst apple employee, no forget that, worst salesmen employed by anyone in ths world.

the new intel 64bit chips might not see the light of day until 07. if you can wait that long more power to you.

I was thinking about it but my recently aquired RME Multiface's cardbus II won't fit in the slot, not willing to spend extra cash to get the multiface working with the new computer, and I yet have to reach the limit of my actual system.
but they look sweet...

I'm going to get a macbook in June, but I won't sell the powerbook, PPG Wave and Attack are both discontinued, Waldorf is no more! :(
You can't port to a new chip if your company no longer exists..... besides, bets are not all my software will be ported by that time (cough..NI...cough...PSP! :P )
Another reason is I bought this powerbook used, and it was obviously owned by a tweaker, little tiny dents, and scratches, hell the screws don't match when you take it apart... I souped it up as much as a G4 can be with a 7200rpm drive, and 2Gig RAM, but it's still not as pretty as most.
More like a Crackbook! 8O

There are dual core intel machines in canada for $1000! So your paying $1000 us (about $1200 canadian) for osx, and an isight.
where are you finding that price man, i priced up an nearly identically spec'ed out dell and the thing is about $60 cheaper then the macbook, it also weights 3 pounds more, has no bluetooth, no backlite keyboard, no expresscard, no built in firewire, no isight, and no os x. so where is the bargan with the PC's? speed, maybe i'll give you speed, but you'll have to spend waaay more to get that fast PC then you would on a new mac.
