as was recommended to me in another thread: http://www.kvraudio.com/ has an extensive listing of quite a few free, shareware & demos. http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/ lists many also, but has clunky navigation, popups, etc. neither is great, both are pretty good. just spend a few hours digging through them & downloading stuff that looks interesting.

Kjaerhaus's free offerings are bloody amazing and they cover all bread and butter needs.

Beyond that:

- Izotope Trash
- Voxengo stuff (i use the crunchessor.. yummy)

For Live, Operator is worth a bash.

All of the Applied Acoustic synths are absolutely amazing.

Freeware / Donationware Suggestions -

Crystal
Foorius
Asynth
Taurus
KarmaFX Modular
Ugo's Motion / Texture / StringYheory
Cygnus
Voyager
Ganimed - nice little FM synth
Odo's Seeq One
Ephonic - Drumatic Ve / RetroDelay
Iopolong - Slifty / Splonki / FitchSplifter
Luxonix - LFX1310
MDSP - ducking effects suite (comp / gate / verb / delay)
GVST - effects bundle
SlimSlowSlider - Eq + Multiband Comp
Nutseeq
Kajaerhaus - Freeware plugin suite
SMEX - Smart Electronix FX and other goodies.

Payware Suggestions -

FM7
Reaktor
Dimension Pro
Absynth
Kontakt
Zebra
Kubik
Guru

(would IMHO pretty much cover everything payware wise too a large extent).

Though I find Reaktor / Reason / Dimension Pro more than enough myself.
I only use freeware FX + Lives supplied FX and stuff from Reaktor's online library at NI.
My aren't the wings of butterflies beautiful and do they not make wonderful perturbations.....

See what I don't get is how people call a setup like Live + Reaktor + Reason + Dimension Pro a stripped back setup.. i dont feel as if it allows for the kind of intimate exploring one good synth and live can give.

translated in real life that would be something like:

4 x Nord Modulars
RS7000
JP8000
Microwave XT
Akai Sampler
Virus

which is not a stripped back setup in my opinion. Each one of these machines will take a year or so of getting totally intimate to the point you're making sounds you didnt know possible thru its limitations rather than its depth.

seriously - you need to check out the AAS stuff. the sound quality and playability is truely great. to me, they are among the very few great soft synths - true expressive instruments. http://www.applied-acoustics.com/
