[OT] God of Electronic Music.

Post by Alex Baldwin » Sat Mar 04, 2006 12:57 am

Hi all,

Question: Who would you consider the most influential
electronic musician?

I would have to say Richard D. James (Aphex Twin)
Live 5, Novation Remote 25le, NI Electronic Instruments 2, Automat, Blue, Albino 3, Bass Station, Proteus X, Soundhack, Tweakbench FX,
various other freeware for PC and Mac

oh god...here we go.
influence is such a vague concept which can be analysed in so many ways as to produce a slew of viable and conclusive answers.

but I agree with you

true - aphex twin is the leader of the scene but for me i don't like all his work

original masters must be kraftwerk - but really i dont think that we should restrict this defintion as so many current electronic artists have very little in common with the above

I think Aphex Twin is perceived to have a lot of influence, by people who are heavily plugged in to the internet "subculture", but that this is an atypical sample.

I'm not sure who I'd say, but likely someone who was involved in a musical style that has had a broader influence than glitch/IDM (which was, and is, a niche genre popular mostly on the internet). "Offline", house and rap are listened to, danced to, and purchased much more, probably in the orders of magnitude.

One of the fathers of dub, or house, or maybe an influential rap producer, would seem better guesses to me as far as pure "influence" is concerned.

I agree that glitch/idm whatever bullshit label you want to apply to that kind of music as a genre *is* a pretty small thing.

However, you have to admit that a handfull of people like aphex and autechre are bigger than the scene they define.

Just listen to how that stuff's aesthetic made it's way into more mainstream hip hop and r&b, timbaland for instance.

Or how about bjork? She's "underground" in the most mainstream way imaginable. Yet the music that lfo and matmos both made for her was definately influenced by the best that "idm" had to offer.

Also remember that "idm" records also ended up in indie-rocker's record collections too. I think it would be a mistake to write it off as an internet phenomenon, whatever that means anyway.

I think that "glitch" is something that computers kinda do easily -- so I'm not sure that anything involving "choppy" or "sporadic" drum programming can be attributed to influence from IDM.

But, I do agree that it must have had some degree of influence outside of just "fans".

i think its true to say that the likes of aphex twin and boards of canada are bigger than their genre

for us who listen to electronica/idm they may seem very powerful figures but in the whole of the music scene is this really the case as how many people actually listen to these genres. Even most genres of dance are largely underground.

For me the biggest influence in electronic music is kraftwerk - they were instrumental (no pun) in creating techno and thus most dance music. They influenced electronica obviously; futhermore pop music generally, which is the largest group of listeners by far.

However if we talking about indirect influences we can go way back to debussy, stockhausen or even the beatles.
