Live as looping tool

Post by statik » Fri Oct 03, 2003 1:29 am

I've had serious issues with Live being able to consistently trigger newly recorded clips. They often fail to trigger until I give them a "nudge" by clicking one of the sample edit buttons, or by momentarily changing the input type. This does NOT occur when quantizing is set to 'none'. Am I really the only one with this problem? If so, then do you think it's the combination of programs on my computers?
This problem is now seriously endangering the viability of a major project I'm involved in.
regards

Live 2.03 (works OK most of the time)
Live 2.12 (fails to trigger every 16 bars)
Live 3b (fails to trigger 50% of the time, useless to me)

Logic Audio 6.01
Reason 2.0
867 mhz Powerbook
B&W G3
800mhz Emac
Emagic 6|2m USB interface

check both your global quantize settings on the control bar at the top of the screen, but sounds like you really need to check your preferences>defaults and the quantization setting there, as well as the clip launch mode and loop/warp setting. I have my quantization there set to "global" , and lauch mode to trigger, and loop/warp to "auto". These settings have been perfect for live as a looping tool with instruments--if you want to quantize and play to the click, then set you control bar quantization to bar, then you hit star/stop recording anytime during the measure before you want to start/stop recording, it will start stop at the best bar between measures, so you're always on the "one". With quant. set to "none", live won't be linked to tempo, and will act like a hardware looper (possibly with more noticable latency depending on your setup).

Live Looping

Thanks for the reply Ryan. Unfortunately these are the exact settings I use. It can't be the settings I use, because the problem is intermittent. When quantizing is set to 'none', I don't have the problem, but then Live becomes useless for my purposes. However, if you're not having any trouble, I'm really wondering if Logic Audio or my Emagic interface have anything to do with it.

yeah, if its intermittent then it may well be the usb interface (try to get the latset drivers installed) or the combo with logic--is live the rewire slave to logic. If so, it may be that somehow it is not being synced perfectly, maybe there are some settings in logic to help that. Search these forums for logic and maybe you'll find out if someone's had this problem before, or something. I know there are people out there that have live and logic running smoothly together.
