Ever sell gear to Guitar Center??

Post by Willyum » Sun Mar 05, 2006 8:41 am

Now that Guitar Center says they will buy your old gear from you, I'm thinking about selling off a few things to get the new stuff. Will I get a better price if I bring everything together or seperate...Should I buy on the spot or buy the new gear after the sale of old gear is complete?

I'm in NYC, do they have set prices or will I get better/worse deal from different locations (Good location??)

Any Idea how much I could get for......
(All in Very good condition)

Event EZBus (mixer/USB audio/controller)

Novation ReMOTE25 (compact keyboard controller)

M-Audio FireWire 410 (firewire audio)

Casio FZ-1 (sampler keyboard)

Roland R-5 (drum machine)

Roland SoundCanvas SK-88 Pro (37 Keyboard)

Tascam MidiStudio 644 (20 channel mixer/4 track recorder)

Guitar center isnt gonna give you SH!T for your gear. You should go the ebay way or even craigs list.

This isn't always true. If you know the clerks at the store, and you want store credit rather than cash, you can get a decent price sometimes. Granted, ebay or cl will pay more, but by the time you factor in shipping and other stuff, it isn't always worth it.

Yeah, that's one of the only pieces I'm considering keeping....mine works great, It's just I have a cheap Mic and the mic pre's in the FW 410 are a little warmer. But everyone one keeps talkin bout that Motu Ultra light.....I think that's the name of that new one.....looks pretty good. If I don't get a decent amount for the EZBus I'm keeping it....never had any problems with it.

I'm not sure if it's totally true but I was once told that they give you litterally half of the cash they think they will be able to sell it for. so if they think they can sell it for 200 they are only going to give you 100. same amount that most pawn shops will give you actually.
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

PLease, please, please do yourself a favor and sell the equipment on craigslist or ebay.

Guitar Center know absolutely fuck-all about the equipment they sell and the idiots that work in there at weeekends are beyond stupidity.

You know what they do to figure out what to pay you for your gear? They go into the back and log onto ebay and then offer you just less than the cheapest price they saw the gear sell for.

And if they can't find it on ebay they just lowball you.

They offered me $30 (!!) for a pair of spirit absolute zeros monitors which I later sold for $150 .. and offered $400 for a two-month old Roland XV-5080 (which I later sold for $900).

Absolute fucking idiots....

There was a sales rep for GC looking at the musical instruments section of CL a while back. I had a bunch of gear on there, and she offered me ridiculously low prices. I made her a counter-offer, and she stopped emailing me. Ha.

Except they do make mistakes with used gear sometimes. I picked up my (used) Alesis Ion for $400. It was in absolutely perfect condition, and I got a warranty. That was a good deal. :)

Don't sell to guitar center. Sell on Ebay or have fun burning the stuff.

you may get more in trade in value than cash for your gear.
so if you've got your eye on some other gear, it may be worth it.

but do some research. search "completed items" at ebay to see what your gear has actually sold for in the past. If guitar center will give you 80% of that total value in trade in value, it would actually be worth it. You'd dodge all the b.s. eBay fees, shipping hassles.. and you could walk out of GC that day with the gear you want.

just something to consider...

I went to eBay to search for a few items for price comparrison but I didn't see anything that said 'completed items'. Is ther a seperate section I should be looking under for this info?

Thanx for all of you guys replies so far.

what i do is search for your item first.
like.. "event ezbus"

then when that search comes up, you'll see a table on the left
with "search options"
here, check the box for "completed listings"
you'll have to enter your ebay user name and password to search completed listings (it will prompt you on the next page if you arent already signed in).

Then you will see completed auction listings that fit your search terms.
