i don't recommend cubase on a mac, and even i don't like cubase or any other steinberg product, but this recommendation is netral, because cubase is VERY WELL KNOWN running very badly on macs in terms of CPU and stability.
it's a PC apps, they did a very bad job porting it over to mac!!!

logic and live i think are the best apps, live for, well live and for quick *scratch book style* production... writing and Logic for the serious production work and also it's a nice writing tool... and the *don* for extensive midi use.
the plugs and soft synths it ships with are from excellent quality.

excellent! could you please tell me how to turn off the grid? Also, how do you go about bouncing / editing effects on a clip in live?

I'm very familiar with the session view in live, I love it to bits. The arrangement's ok, but if I can get my head around it, and it can do what I'm after, I'll happilty keep plugging away with live.

I'd much rather not be using something that requires a dongle. Using a laptop, I'd really rather not have to take a key around to use just one app.
thanks for all your help so far

I mainly use Logic and Live on Mac (and Numerology for modular step sequencing). I also use Live on PC. In the past I have been using Cubase and Cubase SX on Mac and PC (and ATARI!). Last year I did a magazine test of music computers and it became pretty clear that SX is very good on PC but not on Mac. Logic turned out to be the winner for Mac because it is so CPU friendly on virtual instruments. However, regarding plain audio track playback SX scored better even on the Mac.

I can't speak about Digital Performer, although it seems good from what I have read and heard (not as CPU friendly as Logic). But out of my own experience I would go for Logic Pro. Most good stuff doesn't come with the Express version. But anyway, there's a good upgrade offer so you may want to start with Express and upgrade later on.

Functions I like in Logic, that are not to be found in Live or SX, is the good sequencing environment. One example: if you use pHATmatic Pro to slice up and play back audio loops you get a MIDI file with the unique groove timing from the audio loop. In Logic you can simply copy that timing and use it as a MIDI Groove quantize template for other MIDI tracks. Doing that in SX is not possible, unless you first bounce the MIDI + audio slices to an audio file, open that audio fiel and apply SX Hit Points to it. From the "Hit Points" stage you can get a MIDI Groove quantize templet, but not directly from the groovy MIDI file, like in Logic. Speaking about Live, it doesn't support any kind of MIDI quantize template creation from source files.

You also get a lot of good effects and synths with Logic Pro (not with the Express version, though).

I also like the Apple Loop handling in Logic. If you can keep Live and also pick up Logic Pro you will be very well off.

The only thing I don't think Logic is good at is being the tool for surround music production aiming at DVD multimedia. But only Nuendo is really good at that. I also hate the fact that Logic doesn't support anny real-time MIDI sequencing control, like Live does and Numerology masters. You just have to record all MIDI in Logic before the magic can start flowing.

you do even with express, not as comprehensive as in pro but still a very nice bundle.

also pro is obviously a giant step ahead of express, i rate express as one of the most efficient bang for the buck apps on the market. the stripped down plug-in / softsynth bundle that ships with express is already worth every single penny of the apps.

Hi sweetjesus,

Can you explain more about what you mean by "precision"?

Cheers.
in pro tools you have have thousands of microedits and it will not impact the engine performance as badly as doing the same thing in Live or SX does.

also the way the individual wave blocks are shows, you feel like you can see how your edits are working with the groove a bit more.

i've done some awesome edits on pro tools.. completely changing 3 notes into an acid lead solo for example...
