Electronic Sound Mmmmmmmm

Post by djlt » Tue Mar 07, 2006 9:40 am

This one is for DJs. I am sure with all the battles you come up with other DJs that wont accept Ableton and slam it as geeky and not the same as a DJ that mixes on CD or Vinyl.
The sound in a club when you play vinyl is so much more warm, vibrant and in the course of a build up or atmospheric track you tend to get the feeling of the room you are in. I find the electronic sound flat sometimes from Ableton. Tried using a few things like Saturator but it blows the volume level too high. Does anyone have any ideas or settings I can use to recreate the vinly sound.

Have you tried turning down the master fader? That might help if the volume is too high....

I download straight from DJ download and Beatport. I listen to each track and adjust its volume until it stops clipping the master. Then I bring it into my Ableton set where I have my setup.

Is there anyway to create a warmer feel to your sound, something that can sit on the master to give the feel of a big room or warmer sound.

Cheers!

i have used ableton in many a kick ass nite of a party. no one's complained yet, on the contrary, its always gone over well. while i may tell a difference if i try, between the warmth of playing back mp3s (not ableton necessarily) versus vinyl, 1) im too busy spinning with it and having fun 2) ive been using CDs almost exclusivley for the year before ableton to DJ, so theres not much difference there. you could say i already had adjusted to the potential perceivable difference of analog VS. digital. possibly, just the awareness of it allowed me to NOT think about it.

if youre on the floor, and im using ableton, it's gonna sound good - too good to be thinking about what you may NOT be hearing. :)

there are factors and variables of course...its all about source material and signal flow. wav's as source material will always naturally be better (not thta mp3s are bad - but they have a higher potential for higher quality, by nature.)

warping affects sound quality...repitch mode? beats? complex?
plugins- boosting a track whose level is at 0dB just a tiny bit with an EQ3 puts a track in RED.
compressor on the mains? maybe you should...maybe you shouldnt.
a saturator could help, with the right settings. adjust the output level and any amount of added gain can be offset.

i'd think about trying Anteres Tube Plug-in, ive always thought that sounded pretty warm. and dont get me wrong, i love vinyl and have for years, and always will! i miss seeing it more, but i also love the future and present :)
my favorites at the moment: MASSIVE. FM8. LIVE 6. Bome's Pro. KORE.

One thing thats different b/w Analog and Digital is that you cant let digital overload in red like you can with Analog. You must keep the Digital below overload it will sound soo much better. So many things come into play when trying to get that Big sound. EQ and SAT work if tweaked just right. You shold try Duplicating one track when playing LIVE and pan each track alittle just make sure you start both tracks at the same time and that will give you a nice big sound.
