Adium is better than ichat, msn, yahoo, aim, all of it

Post by Digi V » Wed Mar 08, 2006 8:43 am

This instant messaging client is by far the best on the net but its only for macs =)

seriously this thing is super customizable. there are so many different things you can do, so much you can download from the site and the community. you can change or make your own desktop icon, here/away symbols, buddy list layout, colors, features, sounds, smiley , everytihing.

its a solid client and it supports yahoo, msn, aim, ichat, google chat, a bunch.

any mac user tired of aims bland crap, and ichats lack of stability should def check this out.

def try it out. ichat is fucking terrible lmao.

the only thing Adrium lacks right now is video conferencing. i think apple has a lock on that, i'm not sure, still tryiing to find out.

Adrium is amazing, i promise. you can make your shit look really playable, fun, kiddy, slick and stylish, super professional, whatever you want

the best thing about it is you function yahoo, msn, google chat, aim, all under one client.

has Adium improved on the file transfer issue?
i remember Sqook was using Adium for a while, and any time i wanted to send him a file it would never work.

I use iChat, but i'd say i use it for only 60% type/IMing, 20% file transfering, and 20% audio and audio/video chat.
how is Adium on all these functions? If its improved i'll check it out again... but if you still can't transfer a friggin' .jpg without crashing it then what good is it?

the good thing about adium is the developers really do jump on bugs really quick.

as far as i can tell file transfer is just fine.

the video chat/audio chat is another story. i'm researching the issue on their forum and so far i've just been told "its an on going discussion"

i'm thinking apple might be locking down who can use video/audio on macs. for some reason you can only use ichat if you have a mac, but send video and audio to someone using aim on pc. weird? i dunno about this yet.

well then until they can replace iChat feature-wise 100%, i'll stay where i am.
in the meantime, i use 100% of the features in iChat and have come to depend on them to communicate daily.
No i can't make it look all froofy candy rococo, but i can have a video chat with associates in Europe, while simultaneously transfering .pdf's and .doc's back and forth. and thats a bit more important to me.

No, unfortunately it still crashes sometimes. That and the lack of a/v conferencing are the only reasons I keep ichat around.

Adam - Don't you think iChat has, umm, the worst interface ever? What with the bubbles an all? I think it's horrible. Adium can be made to look cleaner, and you can make the contacts list transparent and floating and such. I don't use it much as I'm rarely online from my Mac anymore but it's definitely the best thought-out IM client I've seen, interface-wise.

yeah whats the deal with adium and file transfers- i was gonna download and set it up but said something about unstable transfers?

i personally like the iChat interface unfort they left out some key things i loved about AIM-

1. animated Gif avatars- silly i know but cmon just add it.

2. being able to have shared folders that you can set access to. i used to be able to grab files and folders from my home computer at work. or leave folders for specific people to access.
