[OT] new wind synth

Post by Fingers » Fri Mar 10, 2006 10:18 pm

Has anyone had a chance to play with one of these? I'm a lapsed saxophonist and I've been toying with the idea of getting an old wx7 or something off ebay, but this new akai looks like it could be the dug's nads.

I've played the EWI 1000 and 3000. the new one looks interesting. did I read that right that there's no need for a sound module since it's built in? Very nice.... I'm reading more... price looks good too.... cheaper than the older version.

I once saw Tower Of Power and Emilio Castillo rocked the socks of everyone on a Lyricon, was thinking of getting one back then but it was way to expensive.

What's the price on this?

I've found a few UK dealers selling it for about £400, and it seems to be around $700 in the US. I'm very tempted...

BTW, during the hunt for reviews of the Akai I found this:

No mention of a price for it, though!

Some guy over at KvR is building a wind synth (the actually sound generating software, not the controller) that has gotten incredibly good reviews. And he is giving it away for free. Too lazy to find it myself just now, but look in the Instruments forum.

There are recordings of people playing it with a midi wind controller available there.

I'm more interested in the MIDI capabillities of this than it's actual sound engine though, for expressive playing, hooking it up to a synth and letting your breath control things like filter settings and bends could be awesome, there's only so much you can do with a mod wheel, with your breath you could do all kinds of modulation that would be next to impossible using pitch/mod wheel.

400£ is pretty steep for an impulse buy though hehe, hope they get it in a music store around here so I could try it.
