Is Indigo the most reliable card for Live live ?

Post by rikhyray » Sat Mar 11, 2006 3:11 pm

Though not using mine for months, I just started using it again just for live setup due to the fact that it never, ever gave me, or anyone I know any problem
While studio work is Ok to have some firewire surprise once in a few month, or even years, live I want everything 100%, just played like that yesterday show (using my firewire for unwired Reason and Live with Indigo) and liked it , just that I have I/O so missing monitoring option ( I will probably buy DJ model)
AFAIK PCMCIA are the most reliable and RME would be the best but I dont need/want another box and Indigos quality for live show is fine enough.
I am curious what you serious Live live users think.

I've used my Indigo card with Live for over 40 gigs now with no problems whatsoever. It's been rock solid for me so far every time. Touch wood! ;-)

There is a caveat: you need to check if your cardbus controller is an "ENE" type. If so, you will need to download a patch from the http://echoaudio.com site (there are detailed instructions there).

I have found it very reliable, low latency and good sound.

I love that little echo card. For gigs I split the outputs into mono and use one for my master out and one for my monitor out. Most clubs and live gigs have mono systems. Very stable...

mine stopped working after about 3 months, it used to crash my laptop as soon as it was plugged in.

I returned it at the start of December to the vendor, and am still waiting for it to be either repaired or replaced

Your vendor might be lazy ass- probably didnt bother to contact Echo.
I paniced that my Indigo was gone, called local distributor, once he heard what the problem was, sent me PDF how to fix it, of course they could repair it too but it took me less then a minute to fix it myself.
There was a bunch sold some months ago that were missing insulation strip, typical symptom-crashing, freezing the computer. Sometimes the card would work for months sometimes the problem would show up immediately. All that has to be done is to slide in a tiny piece of tape.
I can send you that PDF- just go get your Indigo and try it, though after phone conversation I wanted to get it fixed by them I couldnt resist at least trying, a monkey could do it, real easy.

mine did exactly the same, i was told that it was a compatibility problem as i changed my laptop at the same time.

It was a good card up until then, the quality was good and the price is amazing.
However, i found the indigo light highly distracting in the dark and the card doesnt come with a carry case or any kind of protection for when its loose in your laptop bag.

Have you considered an E-MU 1616m.

i have found this to be a lot better. quality is much better, 16ins and outs (when microdock is installed) and ultra low latency.

the card has only 1 out though, so having a pre listen or cue is a no no with it unless you carry your microdock everywhere with you. :?

This card is very reliable, very good sound, drivers are perfect on mac osX, latency is very low, i use the IO for live sampling and i never had any problem with it, i only wish they would make a EXPRESCARD3/4 now so i could switch soon to a Macbook, but unfortunately this won't happen, i emailed them reagrding this and they will turn to a firewire version of the indigo :-(

i got sent that same pdf by echo themselves, and i just think that it is wrong that you need to stick a knife into the end of your soundcard to slide some tape in to make it work again. I sent it back and got the E-MU 1616m - which is perfect for me, and the pcmcia card even has a carry case. :D

You are very humanitarian indeed.
I am sure Emu is great but then if I wanted something with a box would rather go for RME.
Honestly if this is all that ever went wrong with Indigo it is another evidence that it is the most reliable card
I may wait till Musik Messe before buying the DJ model, maybe there is something interesting coming.

krikor, i contacted them too and got the same answer.

i would have probably bought a mbp if the indigo card would have fitted it.

yes RME are probably the best in my opinion, i had a project hammerfall in my desktop.

th indigo DJ is good because it has a virtual mixer with dummy outputs, so you computer thinks it is outputing sond when the indigo has been removed, if you need 2 outs, and ou have no roblems with your I/O, then finding a similar replacement, for the similar price, will be difficult.

The E-Mu 1616m cost 3 times as much as an indigo.

it just so happens to be perfect for my needs.

I would have done too, if the Emu cardbus fitted it. I went to the sounds expo this weekend in london, i started talking to an emu engineer ho said that a 3/4 express was on the cards, they have started designing one, but when this will be released? can it be purchased on its own? how much will this cost? he doesnt know. id expect they will design a whole new system so that you have to buy the whole thing.

bastards.
