Live 6 G5 dual processor support

Post by Signal Chef » Mon Mar 13, 2006 8:10 pm

I have read somewhere that ableton 6 will support G5's with dual processors.

I did a search on the ableton forum but couldn't find anything about it.

Can someone confirm this so I can take action and get rid of my G5 now that it's still worth some money?

Thanks

Wonna buy a dual g5?

It'll use the second CPU. So our g5's should get a second life.
But that doesn't mean that i wouldn't replace this dual g5 with a minimac

The marketing from Ableton makes it sound like only Live Mactel will support dual processors. It could be taken a couple different ways I guess. How do you read into it?

Live 6, scheduled for release in Q3, will bring—among other features yet to be disclosed—support for multicore/multiprocessor architectures, to the benefit of both Windows and Mac OS users. This feature will bring users of Intel Core Duo-equipped Macs another large increase in audio performance, and Windows users will be able to fully exploit the speedup potential of the various available multicore/multiprocessor hardware solutions the market offers.

The question has already been asked to Ableton. They said that it will be for all multicore systems. that includes the g5. Even old g4's...
It could be stated more clearly though.
But it isn't the official Live 6 marketing mumbo-jumbo that you quote. It's just a heads up that Ableton will support dual cpu's in the future.
Which is very important info for the people who are looking to buy or sell a computer. Especially around this period...

Maybe they'll release more details at music messe.

Ok thanks for the info...

So U're saying that multiprocessor support COULD be done in Live 5, if they get it together before Live 6.

My guess is that it'll come with Live 6...

Originally the statement from Ableton was that Live 6 would support dual CPU for Intel-Mac and Intel-PC, but I was told they will not support multi-cpu for G5-Mac. Now the official statement is that G5 will also be supported for multi-CPU. Everything still looks like it's set for Live 6.

giggity giggity!

I've been trying to decide whether or not to go for the X2, or stick with the 3700+ San Diego processor.

this makes the decision even harder!

I've also heard that a new AMD Socket design will be coming out...
it just seems like a wierd time to be buying/building a custom PC. I need it ASAP yesterday though of course.
