March 14, 2006: Propellerhead software today announces a version of Reason with native support for Intel based Mac computers. This version of Reason, called 3.0.5, offers full compatibility with Apple's new Intel based computers but does not add any other new features to the program. Preliminary performance tests provide astonishing results.
good stuff. FYI.

I find this bit interesting:
Reason 3.0.5 is only available in Intel format, which means that this version does not run on PowerPC (PPC) based Mac computers. This is contrary to Apple's recommendation to developers, which is to ship a combined PPC and Intel based Mac application in a package called a Universal Binary. Based on our commitment to always provide the highest possible performance on all computer platforms that we support, Propellerhead Software made the decision to deviate from Apple's recommendation. Here are the details:
A Universal Binary actually contains two compiled applications, one for PPC and one for Intel. To create a Universal Binary, Propellerhead would need to use Apple's XCode compiler for both the PPC and Intel versions of the program. By contrast, the shipping version of Reason for PPC computers (version 3.0.4) is compiled with Motorola's CodeWarrior compiler. Unfortunately, our internal performance testing shows that compiling Reason for PPC using Apple's XCode compiler creates a significantly slower program than the shipping 3.0.4 version that we have today. For this reason we have decided to keep the two versions separate for the time being.

woah, i went in that forum taring them apart for not announcing anything for intel mac machines, saying they were going to take forever and teams like ableton already were releasing stuff early...
i'm going to get chewed out.

It's really a shame that Motorola/Freescale will stop development of Codewarrior for Mac. It would be interesting to know if they knew of Apples Intel transition in advance, before they sold of their x86 compiler technology to Nokia.
Anyways, hooray for Reason!

yeah, me to....
also, its interesting that they are not charging the"intel conversion" price either when it seems like they took an extra step and did further testing ( more work ). Lots of other companies jumped on the apple bandwagon and are charging the fees. To me it seems kind of ridiculous for apple to do this. i mean its not the end user who is responsible for apple swithching processor architecture, is it? Apple should try to make this transition as smooth as possible and charging hefty transition fees isnt the way to do it. Stevie is telling us that all the existing PPC code needs is just a recompile ( im sure theres a little more to it than that, but it is still simpple in principle. Seems like a pretty good buisness to be in.
As for other companies it seems like they are just following the apple example and figure " yeah we can squeeze an extra 40-50$ out of our customers". Im not an apple user ( PC Dood ) but id be pissed if i was caught in the middle of this.

Finally two of the most influential music apps in the music industry (Live and Reason) are available for IntelMacs.
Now, if only Cubase could be available as "UB" as soon as Live or Reason, I'll be in heaven

perhaps there's more productive ways to pass time than criticizing companies whose software you don't even like? books can be fun, perhaps good conversation with friends at a local pub or cafe? maybe take in a movie down the cinema, the possibilities are endless

whose worse
someone bothering with just expressing a somewhat dislike of a particular software or someone bothering to criticize someone else for posting about their somewhat dislike for a piece of software?
hmmm... possibilities are endless.

Well, but posting that you flamed the hell out of Propellerheads and then announcing that you don't like their software anyway (and most probably don't use it because of that) is... well...

Well, Apple ain't the company telling the others to charge fees. And, if you read back to the initial announcements the commentary from Apple was IF your project was compiled using XCode, it'll be a simple recompile. PHeads use CodeWarrior, and short of a total rewrite of their codebase compiling it in XCode is going to make Reason slower.
Apple's making the process very smooth for developers, but then the developer's sales departments come in and say "Hey, let's make abuck or 50 off those upgraders!"
