I use it to correct/experiment with phase. When I record with multiple microphones sometimes the mix will sound like it's pulling to the left or right when everything is panned down the center, so it helps with that.

It's also cool to assign the mute to a key on the computer keyboard to turn on and off groups of effects on a track.

It think the best way to get into the Utility plug-in is to just use it all the time. Throw it on a track as the first thing you do, similar to creating a rack in Reason where you're likely to throw the mixer in first. The more use use it and experiment, the more uses you will discover.

The same goes for compressors. I always like to throw those in. You don't have to hear the compression working, it's just always good to get ever more familliar with compressors everytime you work.

i use it when i've already done a lot of editing on the track mute button or the track volume.
then i had add a utility and it acts as a new main track volume.

I use the Utility plug for the same reason as Pedro...where there is a lot of volume automation, and I just want to add or raise the overall volume of the channel AFTER the automation is done, then I add the utility.

I also use it on the master channel because the master channel is always pre-fader, which means that it's almost always over the 0 db . Therefore, if I have a limiter on the master track, then it'll always be over the 0db mark and overly compress the sound. So I set the utility plugin at a reduced overall volume, as a sort of fader before the master. Then I set the master fader to zero and I don't touch it...this gives me the most accurate setting for the master fader and what output I get. Meaning I know if I ever go over 0db in my final mix output.

I use it when mixing live as a gain control. If audio is at different levels, it sucks using the level faders so i've thrown a utility onto every channel and assigned knobs to them.
