Hi,
So I've been a hardware live pa for years and years. Just ready to start using software. Basically I am trying to use it in a way that will continue building on my current live tech. I downloaded Ableton yesterday and my exp is next to none.
What I would like to do is sequence Ableton live with 2 Yamaha RS7000 sequencers. I would like to emulate my hardware live pa. In the past I have sequenced 2 RS7000's like a DJ mixing from one machine to the other. What I want to do is have each RS7000 triggering "pattern's" and muting tracks in ableton live. obviously I would assign out all the knobs as well.
What I need to do is create "song" or pattern files that can recieve midi info from 2 midi ports. I also need to create 2 "master" mixes out of Ableton Live which basically equate to the analog stereo pair of each RS7000. Each "master mix" would have the voices associated with the RS7000 sequencing it I would just assign those mixes to outputs on my soundcard and pipe them into a DJ mixer.
Its hard to explain my goal, essentially I want Ableton to to all the work the RS7000 used to do in hardware, but I want to sequence patterns, mute tracks, and control CC data with the RS7000.. If possible I'd like to do it with one instance of Ableton on one computer. I figure if I can create a template of some sort this might work.
peace

guys ive done this.
the setup in Live is kind of astronomical.. give it another year or so before the RAM obstacles are overcome with OS'es and Laptops in general and revisit the issue then.
the racks and chains i made to make this so you can switch samples and effect presets on each channel using other clips take up more RAM than you want to think about.

it will be possible some day.

my rs is in a box due to some re-arranging, but here is an idea about using rs to trigger clips in live... this is just theory at this point but worth a try...
now the mute buttons on rs don't send midi if i recall, but you could try to run patterns/phrases on the rs to trigger clips, and then mute/unmute those patterns.
say you have a clip in ableton. midi assign a note from the rs keyboard to it. set the clip to 'trigger' launch mode, and to not loop. now you should be able to play the key on the rs to trigger the clip, and since the clip is not set to loop, it should play, and then stop.
so then on the rs, setup a phrase that is the same length as your ableton clip, 1 bar, 2 bar, etc. have that phrase play the note that is mapped to ableton right at the very end of the phrase. like in grid mode, for a 1 bar loop, set it to play that note on step 16. and nothing else.
now when you play that phrase on the rs, everytime it hits that note, it will trigger the clip in ableton. this should work like the clips do in ableton... when you press play on the clip in Live, it waits until the end of the loop and then starts. so when you unmute the track on the RS, the clip should get triggered to start at the next loop.
now since the clip is set to not loop, it only plays the clip once, but then each time the phrase loops on the RS, it will trigger it again, effectively looping it. and then if you mute that track on the RS, the phrase will stop, so the clip in ableton will not get triggered again, so it is basically like turning the clip off in live.
now so far this is only using 1 midi channel, 1 midi note, and 1 ableton clip. If you had 2 clips in live, in the same track, you could midi assign a different midi note to each one, and then you could change which ableton clip you are triggering by changing the midi note that the RS is sending. either by making a new phrase on the RS, or more simply, by hitting the pattern button and using the note +/- adjustment to change the note on the pattern already created.
The RS will output on 16 midi channels, and can play 127 midi notes. And it looks like Abelton's MIDI map mode can receive data on specific MIDI channels. So theoretically, you could have the RS controlling 16 tracks in Live, and playing up to 127 clips per track.
Say you have all your kick drum clips on track 1 in ableton. Start by mapping midi channel 1 note 1 to ableton clip 1, note 2 to clip 2, and so on, up to 127. Then as you are playing on the RS, track 1 is playing your phrase that is outputing note 1 to play kick clip 1... then you want to change to kick clip 2, hit pattern and adjust the note value +1, and bam, kick clip 2 comes in at the next loop. Repeat on midi channel 2 for all your snare clips, midi channel 9 for all your bass loops, etc.
actually now that i think about it, maybe making a different phrase for each clip in the rs would be better, cuz then you could actually name the phrases in the RS and actually see what you are triggering, without looking at the ableton screen at all.
then from there, you pop all your effects onto each track in ableton, and map those to the knobs on the rs. Select track 1 on the RS and map all the knobs to your various effects, sliders, etc. on track 1 in ableton, then select track 2 on RS and map knobs to effects in track 2 of ableton, and so on.
yah it would take a lot of initial setup, but anyways, thats a way i think you could do it anyways. sorry if that was long winded or hard to understand... tried to explain it best i could. when i get the RS out of storage i will try this out.

Re: Yamaha Rs7000's and Ableton
Did you try it out, what was the result? RS7000 and Live sounds cool. I like the RS7000's mute state LED style:
LED = off if track is empty
LED = on if track is playing
LED = blinking if track is non-empty but muted
The LED blinking speed is just relaxing. How is the difference of Rm1x if I would want to use this triggering approach only with Live? Which disadvantages would I have compared to a an RS7000?
