Mac performance question

Post by LiveLong » Sat Apr 01, 2006 4:51 am

Hi, I am about to replace my old G-4 desktop. I do not want to wait for the new Intel powermacs and would like to know if the new Intel Macbooks are faster than the current G-5 desktops (powermac), for Logic mostly.

Thanks :D

Well Logic 7 is extremely ( multi processor )G5 coded, dont know yet if Logic Universals were announced at the Messe ( maybe someone can confirm ). Im a PC dood myself but from the performance ive seen using Logic on some nice dual and quad G5 systems i really cant see how you could need much more than that. Im also guessing you can get a PPC mac at a nicer price these days, remember universal binary means it still works on a PPC chip or chips...

Adamjay just made a post referring to a post that Orren (of logic tutorial authorship, and enormous dog fame) about how if you jump for a 7200 over a standard 5400 and you pput (I beleieve) a total of 2.5gb of ram in it, you actually will get a significant INCREASE in the macbooks over a dual g5.

I would search but I need to run! Good luck!

if you can wait for Universal Binaries of your favorite plugins then definitely go for a macbook pro. the dual 2.0ghz macbook that I have is about as powerful as a dual 2.3ghz G5.

logic runs beautifully on it!

Again, Logic runs great on G5 PPC chips too, so if you are mostly using Logic and want to put a couple bucks towards more gear grab yourself a dual G5, ive seen them comming down in price by lots lately. Dont need to splurge on a mactel just yet, wait till the binaries run free...

Judging from the results Macbook owners are getting, I would probably get one of these over a G5: Better performance and, in the long run, developers will release updates for Intel Macs ONLY, which would leave you without updates if you own a G5.
