Running off to join the circus..
Well, not exactly, but in 12 days, i leave to work with a traveling carnival!
One of my best friend's relatives owns it, and we're going to work for them for at least a month or two, maybe all summer. We're starting in South Carolina and ending at the Jersey shore.
I'm really excited and it's the last thing i thought i'd be doing in my adult life. I still havent decided if i'm gonna bring the lappy or not.... kind of a tough call.

This seems like a great thing for a traveling musician.

i'll definately try.
prolly won't be too easy to get on the net but i am freakin addicted to this forum, so ill do my best.
I'm so excited.
Sadly my job seems like it is going to be just manual labor, set up and tear down kinda stuff. But I'm gonna try like hell to get them to let me operate the rides and shit.
I dunno, if i were them i wouldn't let me operate the rides.... But they don't know that, so here's hoping!

I travelled with a circus for 3 years in the early 90's. Lived in a very tiny trailer but managed to bring along my Ensoniq EPS 16+ for late night recording sessions. Good times.

As this will be an inspiration to your life, it will bring inspiration to your music (unless they just work you to exhaustion). Bring something. It's an easy bet that there's gonna be more than a few musicians amongst the carnies, bring a guitar, bring a harmonica, bring something. I would have to think of all the people in the world, carnies would love music, that's hard work, season to season, town to town, hoping it doesn't rain but there's the equipment and staff to pay off... If nothing else, bring the laptop to offload the pics from your camera!

i know. it's pretty crazy.
It turns out i'm leaving a little later now, so it's actually 4 days away.
I'm bringing the laptop, but i'm going to leave it with family friends in NJ while i'm down south. By the time i make it to jerz i'll know if i can have it at the carnival, and if not, i can still go use it on my days off. I might even play a friday night at tonic some time in may...
I'm pretty broke, so i'm taking the bus to meet the carnival. So i'm gonna travel pretty light, otherwise i'd bring one of my accordions for sure. At least i'll have my jaw harp.
i'll take bunch of pictures for sure. You may have to wait a while to see 'em though.

I should have told my friend that when he was with the carnival and got busy with the bearded lady. Something kind of unappealing about seing a guy with beard hair stuck in his teeth (I think it was beard hair anyway).DeadlyKungFu wrote:cool, just bring some rubbers and a toothbrush.
keep it leisure
Liesure your story and home location brings me back. I used to live in Portsmouth NH as a kid. I went to Maine to see a carnival once when I was pretty young. It was one of the last old time roll into town and set up the big tent kind that actually had an honest to life freak show. I remember the seal boy and the elephant skin woman. Oh and then there was the 2 headed baby in a jar. Pretty disturbing for a 9 yr old. I haven't seen one since.
Rock on with your bad self. It's hard work but you'll have fun I'm sure.
Props to you if you can get them to not play whitesnake on the roundup.

Word. But what your man really needed for his bearded lady experience was a dental dam.
Y'know, believe it or not all the rides seem to play bumping techno or even hip hop these days. In fact, the first time i heard that Zombie Nation track was on a ride at the jersey shore. And that was before it was a sports arena anthem. I will report further upon arrival, but i suspect the rides will be whitesnake free.
