On PCs, it's found at C:\Documents and Settings\[Username]\Application Data\Ableton\Live 5.0.3\Unlock. So long as you haven't changed any components on your computer, just copying this file into that location will unlock Live. Therefore, you will only need to unlock the software once, regardless of the number of times you reinstall and/or format the system.
BTW, before you get any funny hacker/pirate ideas, this key file will only work for the computer that has been unlocked once.

does this definetly work? what if i change the size of my hard drive partitions before re-installing xp?
Changing the partition size does not matter. I've used this method thru multiple configurations, multiple partition changes, etc., and I've even used it when I have removed a hard drive to go with a singly drive laptop, and later adding the second drive. This method still works great.
What I haven't tried is to change a hard drive or some other component like the mobo or CPU...I pretty sure that doing that will require a new authorization.

Yes we've been working like maniacs all week at Messe. It was a lot of fun, and loooong hours, but still we sat aside do unlocks all week as well, since this is very important to us all (being without Live when you need it is such a pain!)
shi wrote: I'm glad to hear it's at least a normal process. Also, I did not know about the Music Messe (that makes lots of sense). Seems I have bad timing re-installing my system.
The bad timing wasn't as much related to the Messe as it was related to the arrival of the weekend.
Feel free to forward your message directly to [wetterberg at ableton com] and I'll flag it as high priority - deadlines suck, and I hope to have it ready for you before noon Berlin time tomorrow, so that you can finish your project.
Cheers,
Andreas
Andreas! I can't believe how quick you are to respond, and how darn nice you are too. It's friendly, compassionate, and reliable service like yours that just blows away the piss-off attitude of other software vendors. Thanks a lot!

how would i go about doing this with osx?
does anybody know?
this would be really conveniant as my audio computer is not an online machine.
do i just locate the onlock file, copy it to cd and when i reinstall live after an osx reinstall, put the file back where i copied it from, enter in the serial# and thats that?

I haven't owned a Mac in about 10 years, and I have no idea how OSX works, but it seems to me that your reasoning is logical. Look in your profile or your preferences or in application prefs for Live and see if you can locate a key file. In fact, it might very well be called Unlock, so search your hard drive for it.
Once you find it, then a simple test would be to rename it or move it from the location where you found it, and then launch Live. If Live asks for a reg code, then you've found the file. Rename it back to the original name (or put it back in the original spot) and then you can copy it off to CD.
I save my key file with every backup I do of Live install files. I also save it as part of any ghost image. I've only ever had to use the internet unlock feature once per new version of Live that I have owned. Also, I'm sure Andreas will thank you guys for not bugging him for new reg codes every day.

A while back i email support and asked what would happen if you ghosted your machine. They say that Live will not work in that context. This was on windows, didn't ask about mac. Didn't try it, but that is what they say. Has anyone tried?

no definately not, when you reinstall an OS your machine has a new 'fingerprint' , and when you unlock live its unlocked to your fingerprint. what you need to do, is make a backup image of your -current- OS so that you will have the same fingerprint when you 'reinstall' the OS from this backup image...-and- copy your unlock key.
you can do this with carbon copy cloner for the mac, or norton ghost for the PC. carbon copy is donation ware, norton ghost is commercial
bing bing!

I`ve used Norton Ghost on my PC for a long time.. no problems so far.
Saves a lot of time actually.. and great if you get some nasty viruses etc.
Instead of a lot of work to get rid of all spyware/viruses, you just unpack your ghost and you`re ready in a couple of minutes.

Balllicking aside, I feel like we wittnessed something pretty cool. One of my former friends and roommate had two masters degrees, was fluent in three languages, wrote like a scholar and couldn't get a fulltime job anywhere. It made me a little bit pessimistic about graduating. Then I see something like this. Hell yeah.

This is the kinda bullshit legit users have to go through with legit software.. Challenge and response is bullshit security tactics that only benefits the company and not the software purchaser. Its garbage and crap and should be against the fuckin law! Seriously! Thats why you download the H20 version TOO! So you don't get fucked out of your software.. I have the cracked and the legit version. And i find that the cracked version run WAAAAAY better then the legit. Go figure! Do yourself a favor and download the cracked 5.03 H20 version.. And give Ableton the flying fuckin finger with their bullshit, Challenge and response crap that makes you their bitch the rest of your life while your using their software..
Fuck you Ableton and your bullshit unlock limit. WE PAID 500 bucks for this! Let us fuckin decide how many god damn times we want to unlock it!
When you buy a car, do they say you can only unlock it 500 times before your key wont work anymore? No, they don't.. Get a fuckin clue!
