overdub midi controllers in arrangement{solved}

Post by Angstrom » Tue Apr 04, 2006 11:00 am

{edit}I solved my issue with this, so either ignore this post, or read the last post if you suffer similar {/edit}

the issue: overdubbing midi controllers assigned in Live overwrites previously recorded other controls on the same track.

to clarify: If we record a midi control assigned to 'track volume' then rewind and record a control assigned to 'pan' ... that will overwrite the 'volume' envelope!

note, this issue is nothing to do with 'OVR'

replication:
  • go to arrangement page
  • press "midi" to start assigning dials
  • assign a physical control to volume, another one to pan
  • record a few bars of turning the assigned volume up and down via the control
  • stop , rewind
  • overdub the same bars with turning the pan control up and down.
  • playback
result: the volume envelope has been deleted!

it's a real shame Live continues to have these "big misses", something like this is a cornerstone of recording/overdubbing midi data, yet it has been missed by the team.

additional information - if you DONT assign the controls in lives midi learn, but simply record them as 'cc73 , cc74' etc, then the controls do not overwrite each other. It is an indication that the midi assignment and 'absolute/relative' is implicated in this.

but see the thing is that it works just fine for me over here. so there's something else going on

if it helps with the diagnosis, this was using the knobs on an oxy8 (old style) going in through the midi input of the bcf2000, over usb.

the oxy8 is assigned to channel 2, although i've noticed that the knobs still seem to transmit over channel 1 for some reason.

there already was one person a while back for whom a midiyoke feedback problem seemed to cause this. i beleive there was a second person yesterday with the exact same problem. (midiyoke)

hmm, it's possible this issue has re-arisen since I had to trash my preferences recently. I'll investigate more.

I was sure I could do this previously but recent tracks have suffered under this issue

YES!

oh, and of course a big

and YES! again because I need this so bad right now.

my stupid and humiliating error was that after the clock-change for spring here, I had to trash my prefs due to me still using 5.02. That reset my midi interface, or I did something to it at that point leading to a duplicate remote input, the duplicate remote input seems to overwrite previous data with static values.

The reference to loopback midi led me to the error so thanks for that.

I'll just pop another of these in here

I am the newbie that is suffering the same overwrite problem.
i am runnign a edirol pcr-30 via usb into my mac g4 laptop. could one of you walk me through the remote problem you are talking about? I just went into midi prefs and disabled all remotes, hoping it would help but that is not it. i don't use midi yoke.

any help would be much appreciated.

thanks

hello,
teh edirol issue seems common so - go into the midi prefs, you will probably see a list of incoming like

---------------- track -- Sync -- Remote
Edirol Midi In : ... OFF .... OFF ... OFF
Edirol PCR30 1 : ... ON .... OFF ... ON
Edirol PCR30 2 : ... OFF .... OFF ... OFF

well, make it look like that anyway - it's 'track' that causes the problem
Mine had both PCR midi 1& 2 activated, 2 overwrote 1 causing the annoying issue.

Ah, this is good to know....what is the big difference between track and remote, anyway? I could never figure that out.

i was so psyched to read this solution. and then my hopes were dashed. it looks like i have some kind of bug.

i configured the edirol as above. checked it and still got overwrite. i can overdub notes no problem.
i am on a g4 laptop running live 5.02 and os x 10.3.9. maybe there is some unhappiness there?

so bummed.
