DJM800 ...AWESOME! A&H better hurry up!

Post by ben_blue » Wed Apr 05, 2006 2:01 pm

any of you guys in the DJ situation - the DJM800 is IT. ive used it on stage with CDJs, and used it with Ableton Live. Its a dream.

http://www.djstore.co.uk/cgi-bin/item.pl?item=piodjm800

the messages it sends are hard-coded - so, you could hook up your lappy to one anywhere in the world and know what to expect!

every single knob and button and fader send midi - even the x-fader assign buttons - which work perfect with live's x-fader assigns!

i could go on and on....just wanted to let you guys know if you hadnt seen it.

All this possitive news about the DJM 800 is killing me!!! I was hoping that it WOULD not have the functionality of a DJM 600 coupled with a UC-33e.

Shiyit... Looks like I'm about to blow a grand on a new mixer...

^^ possibly or likely so.

yet, the 3D is STILL not ready. Native Instruments had one in their room at Remix Hotel miami during WMC, and, the midi did not work AT ALL! i was so excited when i walked in the room to see it, and so let down to know it barely works.

i am aware of the huge difference between, say, a djm 600 and any Xone mixer in terms of sound quality, maybe even headroom. but, the DJM800 is actually improved over the older ones. even the EQs are different. it is a much cleaner sound than before.

i wouldnt doubt though, still, that in the end, a side by side comparison of DJM800 vs. Xone3D may show the 3D ahead in that department, but, there is a lot of other things nice about the 800. a grand less out of the pocket for starters...
and, i understand that the 3D's eq's and level faders will NOT send midi, which was a let down for me, as those would have been controlling exactly that in software.

but i dont know for sure about that, and, no one knows for 100% when the 3D will be ready, or even IF!

they both will be awesome, but at least now, the 800 is ready to go, and i would gamble anything, you will see that more present than the 3D in clubs and parties worldwide.

cheers

i really think the xone 3d will be worth the wait and im glad they are taking their time to work out any problems so that when its released it will be rock solid!

i dont see the point of shelling out 1k for a audio mixer and complaing that the real eq's dont send midi!! whats the point in shelling out that much if u aint gonna use any of the on-board features!

^^ good point!

i would definitely be using the real EQs, but if i wanted to use eqs in software, it would be cool to use the knobs that are most intuitively set up for that - the EQs - and free up the others midi stuff for other functions.

good point though, really - cus if i was routing ableton stuff into the channels, it would make sense to use those 3D eqs...wouldnt necessarily need ANOTHER eq from software before that.

Have you heard both? Or how about a link of a comparison?

Thanks!

I concur about the 800. Its not perfect, but it really works well (and I think the audio quality sounds great too. I've owned and used the xone 62 and 92 and used both extensively in club settings - and have used the 800 a few times in club installations and it competes if not equals the A&H models. Don't know if the 3d will be better than the 92's audio quality. I doubt it.

I did find a few midi mapping issues with the 800 I'm trying to sort out now though. Nothing catestrophic, but I would like to see if it can be addressed.

ive seen this is action and it certainly does the job

went to circus in liverpool to see james zabiela last month and he used...wait for it...

3cdj 1000 mk 3

1 efx 1000

x2 technics 1210

+ live

and he absolutely tore the place a new arse. was controlling pretty much the whole thing from the 800, and just triggering clips himself using the touchpad on the mac.

its an awesome, flexible piece of kit that seems to make ogical sense for DJs wanting to expand into live / laptop territory. i know that i'd feel totally at home using an 800 for live, as its just logically sensible as its obviously a dj mixer in it own right.

if only live / pioneer released template files for Live that gave you a foundation to make your own from. that would save some serious time in seting the whole thing up!

i have to say that pioneer have really upped their game mixer wise recently. the djm 1000 is a proper piece of kit and the sound quality has improved quite a bit from the 600. i think allen and heath now need to get the 3d bang on as the 800 has really caught a lot of poeple's imaginations, and is obviously a lot chepaer too

going to be interesting to see how they both stack up when they are both out in the public domain, but if i was going buy one tomorow it would be the pioneer i think...

i have used both. mainly at remix hotel back in miami at WMC. barely got to run the AH thorugh anything though, the midi was non functional. obviously it would be fixed before release!

i was fotunate to wina contest that landed me playing one of the tents at Ultra i Miami, and low and behold even that little tent had the DJM800 and cdj1000mk3's.

it was very nice!

they are both badass pieces!

AND P.S. a pioneer rep said that they are/ will be working with ableton to create some kind of script/ protocol etc to allow automapping, ala mackie control emulation. dont take that as gospel though...yet..
cheers

But the 3d is a sound interface as well right? That makes up for the extra cost if it's good...
